There are no words to adequately describe The Breakers. There's no way anyone could live like this in today's world - the amount of wealth and power just isn't out there.
Italian leather (embossed in gold), full slabs of Swiss marble, gold and platinum everywhere, intricate carvings everywhere you look, a fireplace taken from a 500+ year old French chateau. All of that and more put inside of a sprawling mansion with 50 foot ceilings in many areas and a room for every purpose you could imagine. It's indescribable. I shouldn't have to tell you - just look at the pictures and you'll see.
We were here on Memorial Day Weekend, and went on a rainy day expecting massive crowds. The key is to get in early - my girlfriend and I got here at 9AM just as it opened and many times were the only ones in the rooms we were touring. It's a self-guided tour led by audio. In many rooms, you can choose to listen to additional audio recordings to delve deeper into various subjects and more information.
This is a MUST VISIT while in Newport, that's all there is to it. Like I said, all you've got to do is look at the pictures on this page to see how stunning it is.

I remember clearly visiting this home when I was a kid and loved it, so I wanted to share this with my kids and husband who had never been. First we did a new tour they are offering called the boiler room tour. This was a separate entrance fee, but worth it. You get to go in all sorts of tunnels that go under the house! And it's a guided tour so you hear all sorts of great stories. We also got to see the wine cellar that still had champagne bottles in it! So cool!! The mansion was referred to as their "Summer Cottage"!!! Wow that is mind blowing!!!
It is a self guided tour which has pluses and minuses, I mean you can't ask any questions, but so impressive and massive!!! It was raining the day we were there and it was a bit early in the year so they were just starting to work in the gardens. But it was not crowded and that was a bonus!

Entering this property is a walk back in time. When the barons of this land exploited their wealth and displayed their status with these opulent displays of wealth. Every surface is covered with highest quality materials, marbles, exotic woods, paints, stained glass, ceiling murals and the list goes on. It is awesome to see and you can only imagine how people lived in this opulent environment. The staff was super helpful in answering questions, if the self guided tour didn't answer any questions you may have. This place is something everyone should experience and enjoy.

The Breakers Mansions are located in Newport, RI Take my word for it the mansions are beautiful. Just to be able to walk throw time and see all of the money it took to have someone build something like that. There is a guided tours. They give you a pair of headset and as you walk through and you just need to like next to hear where you are in the building. I only did one that day but I think there are 3 different Mansions to check out. It will take you about an hour to complete or more depending on how many people go that day.

Nice to see how the other half lived. The audio guide was among the best I've used but it was nice to take a break and converse with the docents who seemed to be everywhere. They were knowledgeable and seemed glad to talk and provide details not on the audio. I enjoyed the amazing detail on every knob, drawer pull or handle. And the wood flooring was very well done.
