The Elms
"The Elms was the Gilded Age summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind, who made his fortune in the coal industry hired Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design The Elms in 1898. It was modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres c.1750 outside Paris"

The Elms is an absolutely stunning property. The open concept guides you from room to room. Make sure you walk through the entire property. The gardens in the back is a serene place that will leave you wondering in peace. My recommendation is to purchase an annual membership. There are different levels that you can choose from to fit your family situation. This will not only save you money, but it is also a tax-deductible gift. Also, purchase your tickets/membership online. It is easy and will save you time when you first arrive.
What a beautiful “cottage” as they call them. So wonderful it wasn’t torn down and we’re able to step into history. We used the newport mansion app for this tour as well and again it was very enlightening. We had a great time touring the home and strolling the grounds.
Nice mansion. Julius Berwind from Philadelphia had the mansion built. He was a coal Barron. They would spend about $350,000 in the late 1800s, entertaining during each season. The season lasted about 8 weeks for during the summer. That equates to about $12Million in today's money. They must have had a raring good time. The preservation society keep up the mansions very well.
Nice Mansion to visit. We did want to do the servant's tour, but it was sold out. Please reserve in advance. So we did a self guided tour instead. You can download on the phone or take reading material. We did the reading. I heard some on other visitors phones, and there was lots of extra information, so if you really interested do it that way.
An exquisite display and tour of old New England luxury! Step back in time to the 1900's as you explore the courts and halls of The Elms. There is plenty of history and architectural beauty to experience for both friends and family. I highly recommend downloading the Newport Manison's Tour App to listen to as you stroll through any of the mansions on Bellevue. A must see for all ages visiting Newport.
We highly recommend getting a two stop pass, visiting the breakers first, then going the Elms, and then walking to eat lunch downtown. The Elms is smaller than the breakers and has a wonderfully sophisticated, intimate, and tasteful ambience. There are carpet walkways to protect the flooring. The structure of the mansion is such that you often need to peer into a room from the hallway. A good bit of the furniture is not original. It is cool to see the original electric breaker and the white subway tile bathrooms that have aged quite well over a hundred years.
A beautiful house from the Gilded age a must see site while you’re in Newport Rhode Island. Definitely make sure you see the Breakers and Marble house. I highly recommend seeing this historic landmark
The tickets for visiting one mansion cost25. I would recommend to buy the one mansion and then upgrade it ID you want to visit more. Is a nice visit, self guided tour

Loved this walk through history. The Elms was my third mansion on the tour, and probably the least ornate. But it had lots of great statues!
