The Inn on Ferry Street

Story

The East Ferry Avenue Historic District is a historic residential district in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. The nationally designated historic district stretches two blocks from Woodward Avenue east to Brush Street; the locally designated historic district includes a third block between Brush and Beaubien. The district includes the separately designated Col. Frank J. Hecker House and the Charles Lang Freer House. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1976 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.The Inn on Ferry Street is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.HistoryIn 1856, the Ferry Seed Company was founded in Detroit; the company established a large farm at the corner of East Ferry and Woodward to grow the seeds that were sold nationwide. In the mid-1880s, then-owner D. M. Ferry platted the farm into residential lots along East Ferry Avenue. At the time Woodward was an upscale residential street, so lots facing Woodward were quite expensive (as is the Col. Frank J. Hecker House, on Woodward and Ferry). Lots on the side streets were less expensive, and East Ferry was quickly settled by prosperous middle and upper middle class Detroit residents. Prominent early residents of the district include Col. Frank J. Hecker, colonel in the Union Army and founder of the Peninsular Car Company; Charles Lang Freer, Hecker's partner and noted art collector; William A. Pungs, founder of the Anderson Carriage Company; Herman Roehm, co-owner of Roehm and Weston hardware store; John Scott, a prominent architect; and Samuel A. Sloman, of M. Sloman & Co. furrier.

Not a lot of reviews come with weight to the reviewer. But sadly I had to think about whether or not I would review this place just so I could keep it to myself. No one in michigan seems to have heard of this place making it seem a bit more mystical, a bit more grand, and a bit more personal. I feel my stay there reflected every aspect of this. From the parlors, to the very supportive front desk everything about your stay feels personal, but professional. The rooms themselves are fantastic, they give off an air of "Detroit classic" and being historical buildings they're required to be maintained to a certain standard. From the fixtures to the tiles you'll find every part of your stay clean and comfortable. I can't recommend this place enough. 10/10
We stayed at the Owen house, king deluxe room and it was absolutely beautiful there. Loved the house itself and the room was very nice, clean and the bed was very comfortable. The lady who checked us in was very nice and helpful. We definitely enjoyed our stay and look forward to going back!Rooms: 5/5
Cutest place to stay! Super clean and impressive. Loved our room! The house was so pretty and amazing. Really had a nice breakfast included. I would stay here again for sure! Rooms: Rooms are cute and nice. Bed is so comfortable. The bathrooms are really nice and clean. Nearby activities: Right by the Scarab Club and really nice restaurants. Close to museums. Walkability: You could walk to the restaurants, museums and the Scarab Club
This used to be our favorite place to stay in Detroit. The location is great. The Inn is very near a Q Line stop which means you can get around town very easily. It's also very easy to walk to local restaurants and attractions. The rooms are nice enough with quirks born out of the updating of these old mansions. You trade off modern expectations for the experience of stepping back in time for a few nights. I'm good with that. All that said, I don't think I'll return to the Inn. The breakfast was a major let-down. It's a continental setup where everything is cold, even the egg-bites seemed to be frozen to the serving plate. I've had better breakfasts at hotel chains. I came to the Inn expecting a Bed & Breakfast experience. They have the "Bed" part of the equation down, but that's not what I paid for. I miss the old Inn on Ferry Street.
I booked directly for a night away from home for my wife. The staff not only helped select the right room but gave me a better price than 3rd party. They took excellent care of my wife and the experience was so much more relaxing than a normal hotel. The room was exquisite, the staff was welcoming, the house was impressive, and the location was great. We will certainly stay here again but will refer visiting friends here too. Rooms: Large, very nice, and a great relaxing bath Nearby activities: Museum and restruants Safety: WSU area is a great and safe area Walkability: Musueam and restaurants nearby
Pros: Beautiful Victorian buildings with a good ambiance Nice and safe location Cheap Cons: The maintenance man opened my door and tried to enter twice while I was sleeping. I had the chain on my door. He said he needed to change the smoke alarm battery in my room, but it was not beeping. I am not okay with someone unlocking and opening my door without my permission, especially twice. As a woman traveling alone, I need to know that my door locks and only I can open it. My room was dirty. There was some kind of blue substance on the carpet, a Peptobismol pill not mine, random dust and hair, and the carpet was so dirty that it made my feet black. I had to wear socks or house slippers to keep my feet clean. The place could use some minor fixes. For example, one of the drawers in one of the bedside tables was broken. A mini-fridge and microwave would be valuable additions to each room.
Located a block from the Detroit cultural center including the Detroit Institute of Arts and across the street from Wayne State University. Beautiful mansions renovated into cozy rooms. We were greeted by friendly helpful service at check-in and through our stay. Easy parking in the lot behind the Inn. Nearby activities: The qline public transportation takes you downtown for theaters, sports and restaurants if you don’t want to drive. Food & drinks: A lovely continental breakfast buffet is offered and coffee tea and water is always available in the main house lobby.
Had an amazing stay at the Inn on Ferry Street. The room was just beautiful and well maintained, a clearly historic building with updated amenities. Staff was very welcoming and helpful, and the onsite parking was great. We were in town for a show at the Majestic - a quick Uber ride as it was a cold evening, but would have been plenty close to walk to on a warmer day. Highly recommend this gem. Walkability: Within walking distance of the art museums, the Majestic, and several restaurants Food & drinks: Complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate and bottled water
I spent my one year anniversary at the Roehm house. I am an architecture historian and the historic preservation and historic knowledge the staff has about the house I stayed in with my partner is amazing. I can’t express how wonderful my stay was. If you are a history buff and want to stay in a place where the staff is knowledgeable, caring, and attentive then this is the place to stay. The neighborhood has multiple historic buildings so the whole stay is influenced by beautiful architecture. The kind and welcoming staff made the stay so so wonderful. I only stayed one night, but the impact was lasting. I will be returning! We want to try staying in another house for our next anniversary! Rooms: While this stay is not accessible to those with mobility impairments, for those who are mobile, it is worth it. The Roehm house is beautiful. There are artifacts from the family who originally owned the house which adds to the historic significance of the location! I wouldn’t have noticed if it wasn’t for the diligent staff who immediately drew my attention to the displayed items! The king suites are on the top floor which is three flights of stairs up, but worth it if you can make it up there! They’re roomy, beautiful, homey, and amazing. Nearby activities: We chose this location to be close to the Whitney as that is where we were attending for our anniversary. The area these houses/hotels are in is historic and amazing. I spent more time looking out the windows at the beautiful, historic neighborhood than I did focusing on the room which was spacious and inviting. There are local bars that aren't the fanciest but they sure are fun! Honest John’s was a favorite of ours.
I had never stayed in ahistorical home/inn. But I read the reviews and I was convinced it would be a great fit. The historical home was beautiful and cleeannnnn! The attendant was sweet and recommended some activities for us! Which was very helpful. There are several museums that are within walking distance. She also suggested the games that were available for the families to play and my daughter loved that. We played monopoly that night! The continental breakfast was good. Our stay was excellent to say the least. Rooms: Very clean! The bathroom was nicely remodeled and still had a historic feel to it. Nearby activities: There are several museums right around the corner as well as restaurants. Safety: Felt extremely safe! Very quiet. Walkability: Walkable to museums and restaurants!
