UPDATED 8/8/24: I have updated my review after this morning to a 5/5. Both times “RIVER” was taking orders at the register and she is so professional and has a wonderful, warm, and friendly persona! She really made me feel welcome there is great with sales because she got me to get another tasty donut that I wasn’t planning to get because I enjoyed it so much the last time! I also met the owners “HANNAH” and “SOFIA” briefly who were also both accommodating, friendly, and professional. I plan to bring my friends here and bring foods and treats from here to introduce them to vegan eats as well! I plan to fit this in my budget to come at least once a week so I can return ! Wonderful to see a vegan diner with such flavorful food and wonderful vibes ! ORIGINAL 8/4/24: Came on a Sunday morning around 9:30 and I had: - 2 biscuits in the Sawmill Gravy The gravy was DELICIOUS and the biscuits not bland or too hard or too chewy. Right in between - A side of Tater Tots I was surprised at the LARGE PORTION of this and found I had to pack some of these and the biscuits for later. I mixed the Tater Tots in the gravy and ate it WITH the biscuits and it was SO YUMMY! - The Hot Chocolate Delicious and didn’t need any additional sugar added. Had lots of flavor and some type of sweetener I couldn’t put my hands on that I liked. My only complaint is that it was WARM, and not “HOT” at all! Resulting in me just drinking it like a normal drink. The restaurant was busy tho so I didn’t want to bother the staff with warming it up more for me but it kinda turned me off from ordering it again. Maybe next time I’ll say something. I also found it weird that I was asked to pay upfront because I was dining in and planning to tip but after that I just treated it like a To-Go order place where you buy your food and then can sit and eat it in there.
Delicious savory breakfast food, great donuts, great specials and tasty coffee drinks. Their sandwiches offer some of the best vegan variations on local favorites like pork rolls, etc. The staff is so friendly and accommodating and with only four tables and a small amount of counter space to work with, I’m sure it can be challenging to accommodate everyone trying to dine in. They do an admirable job of it and always seem to keep their cool, just part of the reason why so many people of all ages and backgrounds in the neighborhood seem to love this spot. As far as eating here goes, if you plan on dining in, have a little situational awareness and don’t dilly dally because you’re probably taking up 1/4 of their dine in space and the people who work here are too nice to tell you to speed it up. Meanwhile families are queuing up with their children waiting for you to finish. If it’s a weekend, do the right thing and keep it moving. Vegetarian options: All vegan
This place is phenomenal. A great little find. As a vegan, I enjoyed a breakfast bagel and my carnivorous buddy enjoyed the vegan Chick’n and waffles. Great atmosphere and friendly service. Even the coffee was notably delicious.Food: 5/5
Super cute place with the BEST vegan waffle– scratch that, the best waffle I've ever had. Definitely order it with the berries and cream added. We also really enjoyed our omelette, as well as our biscuit with gravy. Prices are more than fair, and the staff was very pleasant. We'll definitely be back when we return to Philly. We'll probably come back this trip if we have time! Vegetarian options: Everything is 100% vegan!
The HOMEMADE FRIES are to die for! Great small diner with amazing vegan food and coffee. The staff was real friendly! @theveganvegeta
Came to Philadelphia for a weekend get away from NYC and I'm going to miss this place! Had breakfast here two days in a row and the food was amazing! Loved the tofu scramble with sausage and spicy mayo on the side and the tater tots were perfection! The pancakes were also great. Kuddos to the chef! She was the only one I saw cooking in the back and the food came out quickly and was so well seasoned. Would come back to Philly just to have breakfast here again :
I have always loved The Tasty but I popped in on Mothers Day for brunch and was really impressed by the customer service. They were completely slammed but the cashier and server made it seem very calm, even though the wait times were a bit long. I witnessed a truly bizarre customer complaint over iced tea but the server maintained their composure and were still came back with kindness. The food hit hard as always, doing my favorite special of the biscuit, drumsticks, and scramble! I really appreciated everything about my time at my favorite restaurant!
Not all vegan comfort food is created equal—or comforting, for that matter. And sadly, this place falls squarely into the "must-avoid" category. I've tried vegan chicken and waffles in more places than I can count, but this experience ranks embarrassingly low. Let’s start with the “chicken,” which was less like a delicious plant-based creation and more like the sad, freezer-burned nuggets you'd find in the back of a supermarket freezer. The overall lack of effort, flavor, seasoning, and creativity in the food was beyond disappointing. It felt like a bunch of hipsters got together, thought it’d be a fun idea to open a brunch spot in Philly, and then completely phoned it in when it came to the menu. I mean, come on—if you're going to charge people good money, at least pretend to care! The wait for this lackluster meal was definitely not worth it, and the service? Equally atrocious. The young woman taking orders had an attitude that could curdle oat milk. There was a tall fellow who was a bit kinder, but he was so quiet I wondered if he was plotting his escape from this gastronomic disaster. The seating was limited, which in hindsight makes sense. The fewer people who try the food, the fewer complaints they have to handle. Do yourself a favor: save your money and dine elsewhere. If you're looking for vegan comfort food that actually comforts, check out The Beer Plant in Austin, TX, or Angelhearts Diner in Ithaca, NY. Both places have fantastic food, and they could teach this joint a thing or two about putting thought and care into a menu.
Very helpful staff willing to explain how they make the food and what’s in it. They’re making this food from scratch so everything came out amazing. The omelette blew my mind because I had essentially given up on a decent vegan breakfast outside of waffles and tofu scramble. The tempeh bacon was seasoned perfectly. There’s something for everyone here.
Absolutely amazing food and menu. I just want to come back and try everything!! The space can be a bit cramped and they only have 4 tables so prepare for a wait, but the food is soooo good! I love that the tasty existsFood: 5/5
