I visited the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site on 4 March 2020 at 3:40 in the afternoon, which seems to have been the perfect time as there were very few people and I had time to look at the items in the gallery before taking the 4 o'clock tour. The gallery includes photographs of TR's life, some of his best quotes, explanations of his family history, as well as artifacts including family drinking ware, the last pen TR used as President, and election memorabilia. The Park Ranger who led the tour was very informative and clearly passionate about the history of TR and could relate him to other historic sites in New York City as well as National Park sites throughout the country. He led us from room to room, giving examples of what kind of events occurred there such as the founding of the Natural History Museum in the parlor, and discussing how these events would have impacted a young Theodore Roosevelt and influenced his later policies. For a relatively small site, the TR Birthplace has a lot to offer and is a fantastic place to learn about one of the most popular Presidents!
Open again Wednesday through Sundays since Sept 22 after being closed for Covid for more than two years. Tour in this 1840 townhouse was informative: he took us on two floors above and took about 20 minutes, although we didn’t have access to all the rooms yet. Nice exhibit on the ground floor; if you don’t have time for a tour, it’s great to stop by if you’re in the neighborhood. Admission is free, and there is a small gift shop.
Cool museum of Teddy Roosevelt's childhood Manhattan home. I didn't take the tour which was free, and highly recommended. There are some artifacts, photos, videos on the first floor. Worth a little side trip. Probably would take 30 minutes to see everything.
Free admission everyday! Nice museum showcasing the life and times of the first US President born in New York City. There are free guided tours showing the different rooms in the house, explaining their purpose and grandeur. The current building is beautiful but is only a reconstruction of the original one, which was demolished after a new owner took over. The Roosevelt family bought back the place after the President's death. Allot at least an hour when visiting.
They are open Wed -Sat... Maybe Sun? However, I was here 5 years ago and finally returned more excited as I've learned so much more about Teddy. Even with that... I was blown away with the private 1 on 1 tour it's not a crowded/busy place for about 30 minutes. I learned more than the first time, plus being a history buff, specifically with Teddy, I was amazed at some of the details told to me I didn't know. Great job by the NPS fella working there.
A great stop for history buffs and Teddy Roosevelt "fans." The tour was very informative but not overly long-winded.
It is now OPEN for tours, no longer closed. Check their website for more info. Not sure why Google won't update. Great tour with Roosevelt artifacts.
Very good experience. Knowledgable tour guides that provide an informative tour. Great display of Teddy trinkets, in particular the shirt that he was shot in during 1912 campaign and the speech that may have saved his life.
Very nice house and National Historic site. Be sure to take the tour to truly understand what his house was all about. The displays in the museum are great, but not enough to tell the whole story.
