If you thought the chocolate babka from Breads Bakery was the last word in chocolate-layered breads, you haven't met Weiss Bakery's kokosh yet. Similarly chocolatey and swirly in form, kokosh is fudgy, dense chewy, ooey and gooey where babka is fluffy and brioche-like. I also got the poppyseed roll, which has a similarly chewy and dense texture and density to kokosh, only the filling is made with a poppyseed spread. Both pastries are immensely fun to unroll and eat layer by layer. The overall effect of both the kokosh and the poppyseed roll reminds me a little of baked Chinese mooncakes or baklava: dense, faintly flaky pastry with a chewy, dense and sticky texture. If these things sound appealing to you, come on over and give it a try. I promise it's worth the trek on the D train. It is 8.99 per pound, and portions are sold by the pound. I'm planning on freezing what I can't eat... bahaha as if that will happen.
They have nice challah, however it is occasionally mislabeled. You may find wheat or kamut challah in the "spelt" box with the whole spelt challah. We had this issue a few times now. Especially when they make all the challahs round during the holiday season.
Clean bakery with friendly staff. Unfortunately the description of the cake I bought was nothing like the actual cake. The cake I bought was hard, too sweet and did not have chocolate cream inside which is what I was told would be inside. This was for a birthday so it was a bit disappointing to cut into. Will most likely not return for their cakes.
Best bakery in Brooklyn. Everything is fresh and so delicious. Highly recommended
Very delicious bakery stuff, food. All the baked goods are delicious, tasty and heimish, something out of the world. I still remember when the old Mrs. Weiss baked everything alone in her basement. The chalos, cakes and cookies were delicious and so is it now, they didn't change.
Delicious “old-school” heimeshe bakery serving up some of the best black and white cookies, chocolate bells, danishes and fresh bread. Staff does their best in dealing with a “challenging” clientele. Minus a star for the staff not wearing masks nor enforcing mask wearing/social distancing by their patrons.
Living in Virginia, I was looking for authentic NY black and whites to be shipped here for my wife! This is the place. Overnight shipping was actually not as bad as I had thought. The lady I spoke with certainly had the New York personality, so I knew immediately that I picked the right place - hah!
Weiss Kosher Bakery was very attentive and helpful in taking my out-of-state order for a dear friend sitting Shiva who lives in Brooklyn. The delivery was prompt and the selection of baked goods was very good. Thank you. I highly recommend Weiss Kosher Bakery.
First this bakery is so clean you could eat off the floor. The prune danish I haven't had such a delicious prune danish since I was a kid living in manhatten. And the seven layer cake was delicious. Would recommend this bakery to everyone
Thank you Rachel for guiding this italian gal to a traditional shiva gift. My dear friends were grateful. Will be in shortly to personally thank you and try some more goodies.
