We love the Wooly Mammoth! It’s located downtown Anchorage where you can walk and look in the shops and get something to eat nearby. The Wooly Mammoth has a great selection of yarn, and supplies for really cool projects. The staff are nice and we always visit this shop when we are in the Anchorage area. Come visit and purchase your next project!
High end yarn shop with above and beyond customer service. I lost one of my stitch markers while knitting on the flight to Anchorage. I stopped by to see if I could replace it. It’s a high-end shop so they didn’t have any cheap plastic stitch markers for me. But Pat went above and beyond bringing out her personal knitting bag to give me two of her own stitch markers for free. I bought a very nice bag to keep my work in. Wish I lived in Anchorage so that I could return the next time I’m buying yarn for a new project.
Beautiful little store. Friendly staff with beautiful yarn, and some roving. This is the place to get your quivet for spinning soft yarn. I purchased some quivet at another store while in Alaska and it was so full of guard hair it was not worth keeping unless you wanted to spin rope. But the quivet at the Wooly Mammoth was high quality and had very few guard hairs, and is spinning up beautifully. They also have quivet yarn, in multiple colors.
I visited this lovely knitting store this afternoon. I was warmly greeted and so enjoyed the shopping experience! They have beautiful yarns dyed locally. The sweetest lady helped me and was both knowledgeable and super helpful. I will definitely shop here again the next time I am in the area.
Wonderful small shop, high quality yarn. Found some wool dyed by a woman in Homer great colors, very nice to work with. The lady who helped me was great. A few visits ago I got some qiviut in a beautiful burgundy, made a great smoke ring. Worth a visit if you like nice yarn.
Great selection of yarn, all dyed in Alaska! Super friendly and helpful staff!
The yarn is beautiful, the customer service was excellent and I will return to shop here again. I found yarn spun from the fibers of the camels at the Alaska Zoo, along with many other choices of high quality yarn from near and far. Every time I shopped here, I was offered free patterns and friendly conversation. I only wish it could be bigger, with a couch for customers to stay and knit for a bit
This is a wonderful knit shop. I should know I work in one. There are some beautiful Alaskan yarns including quiviut blends. I enjoyed my purchases from last year so much that I made a point to go this year when I just happened to be in Alaska again.
I enrolled in a knitting class with Denton. He was a terrific teacher and he continues to help as I take on new projects. I'm impressed by his patience with me and others who need a refresher course. He knows so much about yarns and he is very respectful of the customers. I can say the same about all the employees at Wooly Mammoth, and I think the downtown go-to store for yarns is a real plus for this community.
The shop is small in size, but well curated, with a lot of options for Alaska-made yarn. The prices are fair for the type of yarn and fiber you find...most of it by independent dyers and none of it the acrylic junk you find much cheaper at chain craft stores. I don't know why the previous reviewer felt the need to comment on the owner's perceived sexuality unless the reviewer feels uncomfortable about their own, as if that somehow impacted his ability to run the shop and offer customer service, but I didn't have a problem. I wasn't hounded with "can I help you? Can I help you?" like I have been at other shops, but when I asked questions and chatted, the owner was more than happy to help me out. I wish I could have afforded the qiviut yarn and products in the glass case, but I understood why those were priced higher.
