Story

Ms Sharron J Kennedy-Frost initiated the Poetry & Jazz Café for ten years in Public School 328, located at 330 Alabama Avenue in East New York Brooklyn. What started out as a math lesson turned into the Phillis Wheatley Poetry & Jazz Café. The purpose of the Café was to teach math in a memorable way, raise money for instruments and more importantly to introduce the students to the idea of entrepreneurship. The café was a success ( student operated, staff and community supported ). It was met with enthusiasm from the students, staff and community at large, After, four years of operation we had our first celebrity visit by Mr. Kurtis Blow. The ideal was so successful and heartwarming that it inspired the idea to for me to eventually open Word Up Cafe. The cafe raised enough money to purchase instruments and produce the PW Jazz Band. Phillis Wheatley Poetry & Jazz Cafe provided an atmosphere where students could showcase their talent and express their feelings in non-violent ways. Gospel brunch is every first Saturday open mic with food on sale. The banana pudding is to die for the best I've had in my life. The food is delicious and black owned. The cafe is only open every Thursday and Friday 4pm-8pm and on Saturdays 12-5 June 5 the Minister Author Aleja Bennett will be signing her books All I can do is stand and All I can do is stand Part Two $20 Come out and sing with us as well
This café located in East NY Brooklyn has such a great atmosphere with and excellent staff. Their chicken salad sandwich on the torta bread is very delicious. Great with a cold ginger ale to wash it all down. If you have time to hangout for their open mic events Thursday and Friday I suggest you do. A lot of local talent in the area come in to showcase their art.
I purposely went to Word Up Cafe to see what was happening. I was amazed. Word Up is a small intimate Cafe which holds a large variety of venues. When I got there there, they were having a Book reading & study session, which was eye-opening and informative. The soup was a filling and delicious bonus to the day. They also have Spoken Word nights where people can recite their poems, essays, food for thought, etc. They also have a small outdoor eating area which is great for the warmer weather months. I think that it is a hidden Jewel in the East New York area. I will be returning.
Y’all missing out on this Absolutely Delicious Coconut Pineapple Cake . I’m enjoying my blended Strawberries and Banana smoothie!
This is a great place to stop for a healthy bite to eat, a delicious smoothie, and a nutritious herbal tea! They even have open mic night and gospel brunches. It's a nice atmosphere to get some work done as well.
A slight hunger pang and a sweet tooth led me to this small, quaint, beautiful establishment. Colorful art and tasteful photography adorned the walls, while arts and crafts, along with books were harmlessly scattered around, waiting for a curious customer to pick them up. The food was delicious and varied. Vegan options are available. Natural smoothies, juices, and teas are also available. But the one thing that stole my palette was the Banana Pudding. A1! Prices are reasonable and affordable. Come through!
From the first step in to this establishment I was welcomed by such great energy. This sweet little cafe offers such a wide variety of healthy on the go options. Staff is so attentive and will not hesitate to adjust any menu item to your personal preference. I had the chicken caesar salad wrap and their infamous homemade banana pudding. Would highly recommend
A friend and I stopped by to check out their Gospel Brunch. The smoothies are excellent but they do need a little bit of streamlining. I went with the Mango/Banana smoothie with honey. You should stop in for that if nothing else.
This is one of my favorite venue spaces in East New York. I always feel at home in this space and our worth through the experience has elevated. WordUp is great place to eat healthy food in my neighborhood without breaking my pockets. I am grateful for this place and their unique staff. This is a place I hope people continue to support and that we can see wordup for years to come. I soon come back for a bean wrap........so delicious.
Vegetarian and Vegan friendly! The cafe is a gem of East New York. The space feels familial and always welcoming. Black bean burger, black bean quesadilla and veggie sandwich are all delish. AND THE CAKES! I highly recommend the red velvet and the triple chocolate cakes.
