A charming shop with a beautifully curated collection of artwork, clothing, housewares and jewelry. Best of all is the owner Irene. Had a wonderful conversation with her about the history of the neighborhood and its evolution over the past few decades. Happy to see this shop holding on in this neighborhood that has a special place in DCs African American history and is rapidly gentrifying. Was happy to spend my money there.
Words can't describe the level of history and skills of the art that line the walls, shelves and racks within this DC shrine... #Zawadi should be a household name for all those that want authentic Afrakan artifacts from a collector and dealer that shares your better innate interests... Make sure you buy 4 or 5 pieces per every visit to this iconic landmark!!! Asè #Ububutu
Zawadi very nice and unique pièces from Africa
Very dope lady who works there. It's open on odd days out the week but it is a nice little gem to find off U street.
This spot is a rare gem. The owner is a curator of afro-centric fashion, home decor, beauty and educational materials. She has been in located at this spot on U Street for over 40 years. If she doesn't have it, you probably don't need it.
Good selection of African art, clothing and accessories in this U Street institution with a long history of serving the community.
Limited selection of apparel. Sales person was very negative and not helpful at all. Not the experience I was expecting based on reviews.
Beautiful and unique artwork, jewelry, clothing, and furniture! If you're looking for a place to purchase a gift this is the place to go. Ms Irene the owner is friendly and knowledgeable.... She has the most lovely purses that you won't see anyone anywhere with! Wall art, table placement decor, and statuettes too! Last but not least a library of books to choose from. If we hadn't shown up within an hour of closing time we'd have spent the whole day there.... I'm certain if it! Despite the fact that we love in northern MD, we'll definitely be going back.... this place is a must frequent for me!
An almost-hidden gem on U St NW between 15th and 16th. Go inside an see a wealth of African art from across that vast and varied continent. You can also find pieces made for the casual tourist. The owner is experienced and knowledgeable, and the prices are very reasonable for North America.
Irene and the staff at Zawadi really know how to make you feel at home. Their selection of goods throughout the diaspora is vast and jaw dropping. It’s beautiful to see how creative we are in all disciplines. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
