This is a cool place. Don't let "art museum" scare you off. The folks are friendly and the museum features really good contemporary western art as well as that of Mr. Mitchell. They display famous magazine covers by AR Mitchell alongside his actual pencil drawings where he sketched out the original idea. Cody Kuehl was one of the featured artists the Friday we were there. Got to meet him and discuss art and music. Trinidad First Friday Art Walk is a fun evening! Dip into one of the locally owned restaurants, grab a drink, and wander main street visiting the many art venues.

It's free and there is some really good art here. What's not to like?
I stumbled across the museum looking for things to do in Trinidad. Awesome venue in a beautiful old department store with plenty of paintings by AR Mitchell who I had previously never heard of but I came out of the experience having learned a lot about him along with saddles and other southwestern/Native American art. They were in the middle of transitioning exhibits upstairs while I was there but still plenty to keep you busy for a short or extended visit.
Well as a kid I knew mister Mitchell because my grandfather worked for him at the Baca house and the bloom mansion he was a very interesting and stern character. My grandfather Hugh Flynn and mister Mitchell always argued about who had the best recipe to make Adobe when the Baca house had to be repaired as it's made of Adobe well that's my story check it out
Gorgeous museum that's beautifully appointed, with a marvelous selection of work. Love Kuehl gallery in the front as well! What a gorgeous and well curated space.
Bison playing banjo painting, ROCKS!!! and so does Jesus
Cool old west paintings of cowboys!! If you like vintage western this place is for you. Cost $5 and we spent several hours looking at all the western art, saddles, guns and American Indian pottery. We'll be back on our next time through town. Trinidad had many old buildings and looked like it probably did 100 years ago. Nice little place to visit.
What a place! This was such an unexpected treat. The story and art A.R. Mitchell is pretty amazing. If you enjoy art and/or history, don’t miss out on this museum.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
