In the spring of 2012 Temple University’s senior landscape architecture studio and University of Pennsylvania’s senior architecture studio independently took on the challenge of designing Philadelphia’s three mile long unused rail right of way, the former Reading Railroad. Inspired by the space’s unique structure, pervasive wild vegetation, the railroad’s dramatic elevation changes, and its location in many Philadelphia neighborhoods, students took on creative inventions to incorporate this historic relic into a diverse and engaging civil experience. Diana, Amy and Susan from Temple and Penn came together wanting to share the process behind their classmates’ work and engage Philadelphians to get involved in imagining the railroad’s future.

By sharing the process of the students' work, we hope to expose Philadelphians to the in-depth analysis of the railroad’s location, history, and ecology, highlight the creativity the space has provoked, and encourage people to consider and invent their own possibilities for the railroad.
