Active Minds is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising mental health awareness among college students, on the peer level. At Fitchburg State University, we thrive on empowering and educating other students on all things mental health!
Active Minds was founded by Alison Malmon in 2003, after her older brother who suffered with many mental health diagnoses died by suicide in 2000. Alison was motivated to change that culture on her campus and the members of Active Minds at Fitchburg State are, too. We believe that a campus that is talking about mental health is bound to become a more open and accepting one. No one struggles alone, in fact, 1 in 4 adults struggles with mental-health related issues. We strive to give students the education, support, and reassurance they might need to keep going and reach their full potential on our campus. Active Minds has now become Active Minds, Inc. with more than 400 campus chapters and thousands of college students across the country benefiting from our work. A little mindfulness can go a long way.
