Deep in the swamps of the Atchafalya, Adam Morales is busy turning mother nature’s beauty into amazing artwork.
About 18 years ago, osteoarthritis ended Adam’s carpentry career. He battled depression for some time, but one Christmas morning, he decided enough was enough. Adam knew he had to find a new passion.
It all started with what he thought looked like the Loch Ness Monster. He took the pieces of driftwood home, added some eyes, and behold! Nessie was alive! At first, Adam felt silly. He thought people would laugh at him. It was actually quite the opposite. Everyone loved his creation and encouraged him to continue. So he did. One piece of driftwood became five. Five became 10, and before he knew it, his yard had become a tourist attraction. His back yard may look like driftwood chaos, but he knows where every piece and body part is. His problem is finding room for it all.
Adam isn’t a carver or whittler. He doesn’t shape or carve any of his pieces. They are all formed naturally from mother nature. He simply washes them off and pieces them together. He may use a screw or two, add some black moss, a plastic eye, and maybe a little paint to bring his creation to life. That is the extent. He will never sand or damage what he considers God’s creations. Adam believes these are God’s creations and he is simply piecing them together. Created by God, formed by mother nature, and brought to life by Adam Morales.
Adam’s yard is now filled with dinosaurs, Big Foots, turtles, and many other creatures. There is also a tribute to the Landry family from “Swamp People”. although you will find many themes in his yard, he has stayed true to God and his patriotism.
Each piece is special in it’s own way, but Adam holds some very dear to him. You will see his Noah’s Ark that he passed up $7,000 for, the soldiers of Iwo Jima that took him 3 years to find the flag, and his beloved Statue of Liberty that was on display at the American Visionary Museum in Baltimore.
