Adopt a Soldier of Shockoe Hill Cemetery is a program of the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
Adopt a Soldier of Shockoe Hill Cemetery is a public outreach program of the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery. The program's goal is to obtain funding to mark the graves of over 300 veterans of various conflicts, and to involve the public in the caretaking of those graves, as well as the cemetery at large.
The cost of placing a government marker for each soldier interred at Shockoe Hill Cemetery is $275 for an upright granite marker, and $200 for a flat/ground level granite marker. For soldiers whose service does not qualify for a government marker, e.g., Virginia Public Guard, we can obtain and place upright markers for $875, and flat markers for $550. Groups and individuals are encouraged to adopt a soldier whose grave has never been marked. Donations to the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery are tax deductible.
As markers are obtained and placed, dedication services will be held, and the donors will be invited to attend. Donors will also be encouraged to participate in active grave tending which would include cemetery clean-up’s, placing wreaths on their soldiers’ graves at Christmas and placing flags on the soldiers’ graves on Memorial Day. Donors will also be placed on the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery mailing list and receive its newsletter.
The proceeds of the Adopt a Soldier of Shockoe Hill Cemetery fundraising program will be used exclusively for the procurement and installation of markers for soldiers buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery. If you would like to participate in this program, please contact Clayton Shepherd via e-mail at
