What is your experience in the roofing industry?
“I’ve been roofing for 32 years. I started roofing when I met the man who would become my future father-in-law. While he was serving in Korea, he came down with a Raynaud’s disease, a condition that causes some areas of your body — such as your fingers and toes — to feel numb and cold in response to cold temperatures or stress. This prevented him from working in the winter so as a youngster he took me out in the winter time and put me on the roof to teach me how to roof. And to get him back for it I ended up marrying his daughter!
I didn’t learn to roof like everyone learns today, where a buddy who learned to roof last year teaches their buddy how to roof this year. I learned from people who had been roofing for 30 to 40 years. Overall I had 5 guys teach me how to roof and the youngest one was 60 years old. I’ve paid for my experience. Every mistake, I’ve paid for, so by the end of the day, I typically owed the guys money when I first started roofing. I paid for mistakes when I was young so we can eliminate mistakes now.”
