Over Aetna’s 80 years in business, commercial lighting has evolved dramatically. Aetna Corp. was founded in 1927 to provide electrical service repairs. In 1949, the company’s focus shifted with the emergence of fluorescent lighting. Aetna’s technicians quickly realized that this more efficient fixture would perform optimally when paired with a regular maintenance program. Shortly thereafter, it became the first company in Boston to offer service agreements for lighting maintenance at a predetermined monthly charge.

This example acts as a model for Aetna’s dedication to providing customer-driven lighting technology over the years. With each forthcoming development, Aetna responded promptly and astutely to remain in the forefront of commercial, industrial and retail lighting. From incandescent to fluorescent lamps, pre-heat to rapid start, mercury to high pressure sodium, magnetic to electronic ballasts, and from conventional to solid state lighting, Aetna has always been one of the first companies to implement lighting innovations, each paired with convenient maintenance plans. As word of mouth spread, the clientele grew. Once just assisting the greater Boston area, Aetna now serves customers throughout the East Coast, spanning Maine to Virginia.

Today, Aetna stands at the precipice of a new era in lighting. Recent developments in lighting technology allow for fixtures that are more efficient, environmentally friendly, cost-effective and brighter; and Aetna has responded. Businesses are taking advantage of utility company rebates for retrofits by calling on Aetna’s staff of highly trained and experienced technicians. In recent years, Aetna has also addressed lighting needs in a previously ignored area: parking lots. Aetna’s “Night Riders” inspect parking lots and signs at night and implement repairs of individual outages.
