Aguilar Branch Library

Description

One of the oldest branch libraries in New York, the Aguilar Library was founded in 1886 and is named for Grace Aguilar, a Sephardic Jewish author.

In 1905, when it became part of The New York Public Library, Aguilar was serving large Jewish and Italian immigrant populations. After World War II, an influx of Puerto Rican and other Spanish-speaking newcomers led to the creation of an extensive collection of materials in Spanish. Designed by architects Herts and Tallant, Aguilar was built with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie. The interior of the building features a graceful hanging gallery with a cast-iron railing and a pressed-glass floor. Aguilar was renovated in 1996 as part of the Library's Adopt-A-Branch program and is fully accessible to persons using wheelchairs. The branch has a Center for Reading and Writing for adults, which operates 6 days/week.

Beautiful historical building. Great sound proof for reading. It will be closed soon for remolding. And hopefully, the new one will keep the historical rails and stairs intact.
I go to this place a lot, it’s quiet, and friendly. The staff sometimes let people play on the computers. Free WiFi, hand sanitizer. If your library card expires, and you didn’t know. They usually let you have the books you need, then later the staff and you can renew it. Even though it doesn’t have a public bathroom, there’s usually a bathroom near the library for me. It’s a good library and is obviously free, it’s split into many sections to find the correct books, fiction, non fiction, Spanish etc. There are seats and places to sit. I find a lot of books that inspire me. There’s a toddler room for kids, though it looks like it isn’t supervised there’s staff around the corner seeing there, there parents there too, suits, fire fighters more. Overall 5 stars
If people will not have use the bathroom to do drugs they would've had one.also need a big station machine like metropolitan hospital to charge you phones and other items.in the hospital they have a big machine that it locks with you pin and none can't steal. also its a sterilizers for your items.
Libraries are always cool! Renovated second floor looks really nice and seems bigger. Glad they kept the map mural.
This is one of the smaller libraries, they have a kids section and offer kid friendly activities. I find the staff here to be pleasant and helpful. There's a cute bakery right next door. If you are interested in reading in Spanish or getting helpful materials to apply for your citizenship exam they have lots of helpful material. You can print for only 20 cents per page.
Always a pleasure to come to this Branch. The Bulletin Board in the Lobby always has useful Community Events.
I was just told that I wouldn’t be allowed to use the bathroom... although I was typing a final paper for class! I was told by the receptionist that adults aren’t allowed to use the restroom due to prior incidents... But that’s down right ridiculous and sad. You guys need to do better. It’s a PUBLICCCCC LIBRARY but you’re telling the public that they are not allowed to use your facility to use the restroom! Someone needs to look into that. I’m sure there’s someone higher up that can be reached to complain about this matter. It was said to me that only the children’s restroom is available to the public and it’s strictly only to be used by children.
Library is as expected. A regular library as far as I know with nothing to complain about. Staff seemed nice and helpful. Everyrhing went well.
As a lifelong learner and intellectual, I think libraries are so important when improving access to books and other resources like internet and educational programming. This branch of NYPL, only blocks from my apartment, is a convenient location for me to pick up texts ordered through the NYPL website given that it's only a branch of the main library, it doesn't house the same volume of materials, but it is absolutely a convenience.
There's no public bathroom available. Not good.
