A studio for experimental archaeology dedicated to the pyrotechnical crafts.
In January 2017, the idea to found the Albion Experimental Archaeology Studio took shape out of previous work in experimental archaeology and ongoing work at a local craft center pottery studio. The founder, Dr Mara Horowitz of Purchase College, SUNY, used experience from archaeological fieldwork in Cyprus and Turkey to establish a venue for experimental work in pyrotechnical crafts in the United States. Based in Danbury, CT, the Studio is beginning with traditional pottery methods including a kick wheel and pit kiln. Facilities are planned to develop over time to allow experimental clay processing, controlled re-firing projects, ore processing, and other pyrotechnical work. The Studio is open to collaborations and warmly invites interested parties to contact us here or at [email protected]. Further information about Dr Horowitz, including publications and CV, can be found at https://www.purchase.edu/live/profiles/536-mara-t-horowitz and at academia.edu.
Our mission is to provide a facility for experimental archaeology in the pyrotechnical crafts and foster collaboration among specialists from a wide range of fields.
