Originally from Miami, Alejandro Ingelmo is a Soho, New York City based men’s and women’s footwear and accessory designer known for captivating audiences with classic silhouettes in exotic materials. Celebrities like Beyonce, Jay Z, Naomi Campbell, Justin Timberlake, and Miley Cyrus and editors at Vogue, ELLE, InStyle, Harper’s Bazaar, W, GQ, and New York Magazine are part of the cult following developed by the “AI” brand. The CFDA recognized Ingelmo’s success in 2008 by making him a candidate for the Vogue Fashion Fund Top Ten. Additionally, he was nominated in 2009 and 2011 for the Swarovski Award for Accessory Design.
“Alejandro Ingelmo has drawn on his Cuban background and his Parsons design-school training to produce a collection that has been both a heady allure and a distinctly New York edge” (Harper’s Bazaar).
“Alejandro Ingelmo translated the futuristic sleekness of his signature high-top kicks into a pair of duffels that have us looking forward to taking our first interstellar vacation...” (GQ).
He debuted his first women’s shoe collection in Fall/Winter 2006, which turned out to be a major success. Consequently, he added a men’s shoe collection which launched in Spring/Summer 2007 with immediate demand. Working out of his Soho-based studio in Manhattan, Ingelmo mingles the Cuban influences of his heritage with a directional New York edge.
His rich knowledge of traditional craftsmanship originates directly from his family's teachings. While his construction reflects those techniques passed on to him, Ingelmo consistently reaches for modernity in his silhouettes and finishing details. With the essence of his heritage and innovative technological development, Ingelmo has become known for his exquisitely produced product.
With an entrepreneurial spirit inherited by his family's roots in footwear design, Alejandro Ingelmo's legacy dates back to his great grandfather who was a cobbler in Salamanca, Spain. After migrating from Spain to Cuba, his grandfather is credited with building the family business, Ingelmo Shoes, into one of the most prestigious men's shoe companies in the country. Known for their craftsmanship, they manufactured men's wingtips and operated both a factory and a shop. Following the appointment of Castro in Cuba, Ingelmo's family moved to Miami where Alejandro was born and raised.
