The Allen Priebe Art Gallery opened in 1971 in the newly-completed Arts and Communication Center on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. The gallery is named in memory of Allen Priebe, a member of the UW Oshkosh art faculty and teacher at the Rose Swart Campus School, until his death in 1965. The gallery is located on the first floor of the Arts and Communication building.
Each school year the gallery hosts numerous exhibits, giving the university community and the public a chance to meet visiting artists and view a variety of art exhibitions. We have recently expanded our regular schedule to include more exhibitions in The Annex Gallery. These exhibits are selected by a board of students elected at the end of each spring semester. The board meets regularly with a designated art faculty director.
There is no admission charge. Refreshments are served during opening/artist receptions.
ALLEN PRIEBE GALLERY MISSION STATEMENT
The Priebe Gallery’s mission is to provide art exhibitions of high national/international distinction in order that the students and faculty of the Art Department may be enriched with and educated in the contemporary culture of the visual arts. The Priebe Gallery’s mission of transmitting visual culture is likewise directed toward the university at large and regional communities.
The Priebe Gallery’s exhibitions are chosen by a board of five students, primarily Art Department students, with counsel and guidance from a faculty director/advisor. Exhibitions are physically installed in the gallery by the faculty director/advisor and his/her class of Exhibition Design students. Students are thus involved in the Priebe Gallery on every level, including being brought to the gallery by Art Department faculty for firsthand discussion of and reference to current exhibitions.
The Priebe Gallery regularly does solo exhibitions for artists from a multiplicity of artistic philosophies. These artists represent diverse geographical points of residence, diverse ethnic/cultural backgrounds and perspectives; they are both male and female, old and young. In addition to hosting solo exhibitions, the Priebe Gallery hosts numerous group and/or theme exhibitions as well.
Artists who exhibit at the Priebe Gallery routinely visit our campus and perform 2-3 day workshops/residencies for our Art Department students, through lectures and critiques, in order that our students gain access to fresh and distinct artistic viewpoints. In addition, as part of the Visiting Artist Program each artist is involved in a Gallery Walk and Artist Reception, both of which are open to the student body at large.
In sum the Priebe Gallery reaches out and brings our students and our community indispensable, firsthand experience of great world art.
