Allentown Public Library Association

About

The Allentown Public Library Association is a non profit corporation which owns and operates a historic building to house a branch of the Monmouth County Library System.

Mission

The Allentown Public Library was established over a hundred years ago, one of the first public libraries in the State of New Jersey. Until the 1970’s, the library operated out of homes on Main Street which donated space. In 1974 members of a visionary library board purchased the fire damaged Baptist Church on Main Street as a permanent home. Over the next two decades, the community raised money to pay down the mortgage debts as well as to fund major capital improvements.

This staff goes above & beyond to serve the local community & any others that have had the privilege to peruse it's halls & rooms. The interior is vast & offers a much different experience then what one may be accustomed to in a library setting. There is parking available in the lot behind the front of the building the front could be classified as The Hamilton St. entrance. There are a generous amount of events that are easily worth attending check library calendar!
A very nice library, located in a nice building, serving a diverse population of the city. The reading area is well lit and airy. There are a well range of periodicals and newspapers that satisfy most discerned readers. The staff is very helpful, willing to offer help in finding a book or a local map. Like most libraries in the city, it has assumed a role of the community hub, providing service like lunch program for children in the summer. It has its share of the less desirable walk in citizens that use the library for its bathrooms or charging the phones. Because of it, one might have some moments of "discomfort" when the street people are swamping the building.
I gave the Allentown Public Library 2 out of 5 stars, and the only reason I gave them 2 stars was because they had a large selection of books in the category I needed to do research in. I was there twice, and both times I sat in an area labeled quiet area. Unfortunately, both times it was anything but quiet. The first time a man on a cell phone was having a loud conversation for a least five minutes and no one asked him to step outside or respect the quiet area rules. Today, ongoing conversations tapping and all kinds of distracting noises ruined my studies. Then , I tried to get myself a library card, and even though I live in Allentown and my license proves that, they refused to give me a card because I live in the Parkland school district. They said I needed to get a card from the Parkland library first, and then I could get a transfer card? I never heard of that, and personally, it sounded like a lie. I doubt I'll go back there. I always thought libraries were supposed to be quiet places for reading and studying, so I'm confused with all the conversation and cell phone use. If you're going to reserve a little space for quiet study on the second floor, then the staff should at least enforce the rules. If your looking for a library where you can socialize, the Allentown Public Library is the place. It's not a place for serious study, or the type of meditative reading professional authors need to do. I'll continue looking for a silent place reserved for deep research. Sorry Allentown.
I love this library and how big it is. Plenty of books, magazines and newspapers to read plus movies to check out as well and lots of computers to use and a great place to study. Love it! Thank you
very welcoming to children- they have a whole area for kids to play & have a schedule of kids activities the staff is very helpful and everything is always very clean
Extremely Friendly, and helpful staff. Very clean and lovely environment. Beautiful Library.
I love the environment in this library and very friendly staff. I have been going there since I was little.
I love coming here and I try to come here as much as I can. The library is easy to navigate, and the employees are friendly for the most part. It is kept very clean and there are plenty of computers, tables, and chairs to sit. The book selection seems very limited.. I was able to donate brand new science books and I will continue to donate as many books as I can to help expand their selection. The customers that frequent this place are often loud so it is difficult to study. But, I've seen employees speak to them about it.. but people just don't follow rules, and I can imagine that it is difficult to enforce rules.
I worked at this library for quite a long time and it has been quite an experience. The staff can be tribal at times and needs to work more like a team and be kind to one another. The selection of books and audio-visual materials is second to none. Most of the patrons are friendly and appreciate the library and especially the many programs available. It is a daily destination for children, adults and a place for kids to hang out for a while and catch up with friends. I wish many more happy years to this library.
It was cool friendly just alot of knjckle heads in there but very quiet.
