Alliance station

Description

Alliance is an Amtrak station in Alliance, Ohio, United States. Located at 820 East Main Street, the station consists of an uncovered platform on the south side of the east-west tracks, with a shelter and a small parking lot nearby.Amtrak spent $1.5 million to improve the station in 2011. It built a new shelter and installed a 550 foot long concrete platform, signage and light poles. Developed by d+A Design+Architecture, LLC of Yardley, Pennsylvania, the shelter is composed primarily of rich red brick and has an enclosed, one-story waiting room with large windows. On the facades facing the street and the tracks, The waiting room is marked by stylized projecting bays faced with coursed ashlar stonework that adds texture to the overall elevation. The design is similar to Amtrak stations in Okeechobee, Fla., Connellsville, Pa., and Winnemucca, Nev.Alliance is served by the Capitol Limited route. Because the station consists of only one platform, westbound trains switch to the usual eastbound tracks to pass the station. Amtrak is the only way, other than by car or the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) bus from elsewhere in Stark County, for travel to Alliance, the home of Mount Union College, as the city has neither commercial bus nor airline service. The station serves Canton, Youngstown, and Akron, both of which are forty-minutes (or more) away by car.

Website says overnight parking but its very opened and unsafe and the staff is not very clear about it. I couldnt tell if the handicap spots are also reserved parking for the train because of sign placement.
Great place to railfan freight trains passing through on the Cleveland/Ft Wayne line
I'd like to give more stars because it looks newly built! BUT, how would a disabled or a person with injury that makes them with limited mobility supposed to get to the platform! The platform is probably 1/4 walk from the vehicle DROP-OFF point. Luckily I walked down to the platform and noticed a gate which had a opening that had a chain on it to make it look like it's locked on it. Well I guess I have to tell on myself in order to tell the story! But I seen that gate and checked it and it would open. So I drove the two ladies down to that area gravel road unloaded the luggage and assisted them to the platform! I have to honestly say I don't believe they would've mad that 1/4 walk from the dropoff point! It's a shame that this area isn't a paved road with directions telling folks that it can be used. That area was for the Railroad company occupying that space! So I probably broke the law for taking them to that point but I didn't care. Shameful that it had a chain on the gate to make it look like it was locked. I hope this would change for the next group of folks that need assistance!
I haven't been here, but the other reviews and the current condition of our passenger rail service and Amtrak, along with the way airline passengers are treated, shows the desperate need we have to upgrade our national transportation system, give the airlines some competition, and the people more choice. I'm from Columbus, a metropolitan area of 1.3 million people, and we currently have NO passenger or light rail. Governor John Kasich Republican was offered $400 million by the Obama Administration to develop a passenger rail system in Ohio, turned it down, and killed any improvement of passenger rail in Ohio, and I believe, over the entire Industrial Midwest. I'm a bicyclist, have cycled out west on several occasions, and I would have loved to board the train in Columbus in late afternoon, stow my bicycle and luggage, have a nice meal in the dining car, relax in the media car, then go to sleep in my berth; waking up around Kansas City, having breakfast, then arriving in Denver around noon or early in the afternoon. It would probably be cheaper than flying, and a lot more enjoyable; so why can't I do that, and don't tell me it can't be done; because of Private Corporate and Government incompetence on all levels, we've become captives of the airlines and the automotive industry.
If i could give zero stars i would!.. my wife and i took a train from New York to Cleveland. The conductor told us to exit at the rear of our car upon arrival in Cleveland. We were in car 5. We waited for someone to let us off the train for 15 minutes.. then proceeded to look for another exit when no one was there to let us off the train... we walked through every car finally reaching where the employees were only to be told they were exiting in between car 2 and 3, and the train was now on its way to Elyria. They gave me the wrong information on where to exit the train and now my wife and i were stuck in Elyria, in the rain. Our bags were in Cleveland so it cost us over 200$ uber ride to get our bags and get home.. after having to wait in the rain in Elyria Ohio where there were no Ubers until 5:30am. The staff had 0 sympathy, only threats if i didn't calm down. The customer service on the phone was just as bad. Ive email corporate and its been 48hrs and still no response. I will never take another Amtrak train until they set this straight! And i will continue to put pressure on corporate, even if i have to get a lawyer, and i have one ready! Reimburse me please! Do the right thing! The staff was negligent in their duties and a paying customer suffered from it.
The train would mostly be late. I was using it once or twice a month round trip. No bathrooms. one time they let us in the station to go to the bathroom. It was so cold. It was daylight when I got to Pittsburgh on the Capital limited. I would always call and ask how late was the train before going to the station. They have to pullover and wait for the freight trains to go by first. That is why they would be so late. One time we sat on the tracks for over an hour outside of Alliance waiting. Greyhound bus stopped coming to Alliance. The day train to Alliance was cancelled. The phone was taken out so people could not call. It is dark back where they moved the shelter. You use to be able to sit your car till the train arrived. The train was late as usual. Some woman got off the train.. NO phone. Her ride left after 2 or 3 hours. Her friend lived out of town about an hour away. It was her first time coming to Alliance. She asked my sister, a stranger could she go home with her to call her friend to come get her. We waited over 2 hours for her friend to find us. She was so afraid. Someone should have been there to meet the train.
I love the beautiful, scenic ride to Philadelphia and NY, and would love to see a more welcoming station. Canton, with several colleges and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is a better location in which to place it. There once was a grand station in Canton. The shelter in Alliance is better than what used to be there, but it has a ways to go to. Right now, being there is like roughing it at Girl Scout camp. I think there’s a lot to be said for heat, lighting, and plumbing. It’s a given that the train will be late, so why not make people comfortable? No one’s asking for a cocktail lounge, but I think Amtrak would see an increase in traffic if they got serious about addressing basic comforts at some of their stations.
Sad could be a great thing with services. Cancelled my trip due to lack of parking and access to the platform. Hope this can improve one day. For now 1with reservation.
Despite the train always being 1-3 hrs late it was a comfortable relaxing trip. I do suggest that they build an Amtrak Station in Canton or Massillon, Ohio though. That is the only thing that stops me from giving a 5 star rating.
They really need some sort of building with a bathroom and drinking fountain. They say it’s low fare area. If you put a building there you’d get a lot more travelers and I do see about 5-10 at least every time.
