Alternative Health Solutions is a wellness center comprised of health professionals committed to providing our patients with health care that recognizes the whole person, delivering through natural means, proven comprehensive and collaborative care, that strives for elimination and prevention of disease.
Although Alternative Health Solutions is complementary to allopathic (traditional) medicine, we promise to remain uncompromised by those concepts and practices, in delivering proven natural healthcare, to those who seek safe, natural healing alternatives.

Alternative Health Solutions, developed by Dr. James Perkins D.C., N.D., has been serving the greater metropolitan Detroit area since June of 1986. In 2011, the Alternative Health Solutions' team of practitioners and support staff moved to a new and expanded facility on West Maple Road in Bloomfield Hills, from the site of the original center in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
Alternative Health Solutions has grown rapidly in the past two decades, placing an emphasis on balanced health for the whole person. The center has developed into a multi-practitioner healing center specializing in Naturopathy for metabolic and clinical nutrition, Energy Healing to address and treat a variety of physical, etheric and emotional concerns and Chiropractic care for physical medicine (including pediatric, geriatric and sports medicine).
Our experienced practitioners collaborate together offering a combination of clinical nutrition, acupuncture and oriental medicine, trauma release therapy, auto-immune/allergy response therapy, structural integration therapy (rolfing), chiropractic, massage therapy, and reiki. For many, only this type of care has enabled them to regain their physical, mental and emotional health, enabling them to return to a full and active life.
It is well known, that compared to other states, traditional medicine in Michigan has held long standing dominance over natural and holistic methods of healing. Proactive efforts to curtail genuine natural healing, have become a focus of the medical field, pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies in recent years.
One needs to look no further than their mailbox to see ads from their local hospital, promoting programs that give "lip service" to holistic medicine, in order to capture the market, but which deliver care that is not born out of a dedicated philosophy of natural healing. There is no denying that there is a place for modern medicine, especially in areas of crisis intervention, life threatening pathology and certain congenital diseases, to name only a few. However, natural healing approaches to disease and injury are often superior to traditional medical approaches, and offer simple permanent answers without the side effects and complications that often accompany the latter.
Our mission has never changed in almost three decades. It states that we shall never compromise our orthodox approach in offering safe and natural methods of healing. Alternative Health Solutions provides patients with an opportunity to pursue proven alternative treatment for a variety of health conditions that is affordable and within their reach, rather than a conventional set of beliefs which offers only one way out to those suffering from ill health - drugs and surgery.

In the late 1990's, as Alternative Health Solutions sought to meet the growing needs of the community, in providing viable permanent alternatives to drugs and surgery offered by traditional medicine, a decision was made. Our center faced a definitive choice: whether to join with tradition medicine and offer a combination of "medical" and alternative therapies (known as complimentary medicine), or to lean strictly toward true natural healing, through Naturopathy and Energy Healing.
Based on years of experience and clinical results, the choice could only be for Naturopathy and Energy Healing. Alternative Health Solutions has been established since 1986. During our more than 25 years of service to the community, what has set this practice apart from other healing centers, has been a commitment to getting sick people well, naturally. That is our mission and purpose.
Not only has our goal of developing a comprehensive natural healing center been fulfilled... but today, Alternative Health Solutions is one of the largest, diversified natural healing centers in southeastern Michigan. That success is a direct result of referrals (rather than from advertising), by satisfied patients, who have regained their health, often after having lived with longstanding health challenges.
Each day in our office, patients experience dramatic, immediate and demonstrable results. Our committed natural approach to health challenges encompasses traditional therapies and techniques supported by time tested energy-based therapies, which are in part or in whole drawn from modern and ancient Eastern Medicine. These energy-based therapies are at the core of our programs of care, which sets Alternative Health Solutions apart from many other medical and so-called medical "alternative" centers.
The healing therapies in which Alternative Health Solutions specialize, are effective healing methods that have long been employed in the healing arts. These methods have undergone modern adaptation, and today medical scientists have proven why they work.
Although Alternative Health Solutions has been using natural therapies for more than two decades, recently these techniques have been accepted by the medical profession and are today being used on a limited basis within hospital settings (such as William Beaumont, Henry Ford, St. Joseph Mercy, to name a few).
Our approach although energy based, is scientifically supported by research and clinical results. Alternative Health Solutions is strictly committed to natural means of healing and will never compromise on the quality of care we offer to our patients.
Dr. James E. Perkins, D.C., N.D.
A debilitating back disorder drove James Perkins to seek medical care in 1974. While working his way through college towards his first degree at Western Michigan University, he was employed at a large warehouse in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Multiple on-the-job injuries resulted in a serious low back condition and severe sciatic pain down one leg.
Four years of taking medication and going through physical therapy, as well as doctor recommended bed rest, resulted in no measurable or lasting relief. Friends encouraged him to see a chiropractor. However, his medical doctors discouraged him from considering this as a valid option for treating his condition.
In 1977, just prior to graduating from Western Michigan University, the condition became so bad that surgery appeared to be the only solution. A decision to put off surgery until after graduation gave him time to reevaluate his choices. He knew surgery had to be his last resort. Realizing that he had nothing to loose, since surgery appeared to be inevitable, he began chiropractic treatment under the care of a very good doctor. This changed his life.
In the weeks and months that followed, Dr. Perkins found dramatic relief and experienced complete healing. At a time when he was just launching his career, he could not ignore his profound experience of being restored to vibrant health through Chiropractic. So impressed was he, that he left his corporate job in 1979, went back to school and began working toward a degree in Chiropractic.
He pursued his second degree through an accelerated program in Davenport, Iowa. During his years in Davenport, he married his wife Ellen and started a family. He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in October, 1983. He returned with his family to Michigan, and entered private practice that same month in Farmington Hills, where he lives today. He is General Manager of Alternative Health Solutions, also in Farmington Hills.
Dr. Perkins states that although he was trained and practices as a traditional chiropractor, he has diligently studied the role of "innate" in the healing of the human body, which lead to extensive studies early in Dr. Perkins career. He became a Certified Traditional Naturopath in 1997. Through his post-graduate work, and twenty-five years of clinical experience, he has become highly proficient in clinical nutrition and Contact Reflex Analysis (muscle testing). While holding fast to traditional Chiropractic Philosophy, he embraces energy healing, and has done ongoing post-graduate work in SOT (Sacral Occipital Technique), Matrix Repatterning, Reiki, and Contact Reflex Analysis.
Today Alternative Health Solutions is a multi-practitioner natural healing center offering a naturopathic approach to diseases relating to nutritional and metabolic disorders, chiropractic, trauma release therapy, acupuncture and oriental medicine, auto-immune/allergy response therapy, Structural Integration Therapy (Rolfing), massage therapy, and Reiki.
Dr. Perkins' vision of a convergence of physical and naturopathic medicine, and well as energy healing, has grown Alternative Health Solutions to a 3,600 square foot clinic. Energy Therapy brings a different way of looking at and addressing such difficult and hard to treat conditions as allergies, auto-immune disease, old injury, and emotional components which impact the body's ability to heal and achieve true health.
Dr. Perkins has earned respect within the chiropractic profession, locally and nationally, as well as from areas of the medical profession. He has collaborated with many health professionals in the care of his patients over a span of more than 25 years in service to his community. His vision to have a positive impact on West Bloomfield and surrounding communities continues to benefit more and more individuals and families, by putting within their reach, quality, safe and affordable ways to achieve health and healing through natural means.
