Physiotherapy involves the assessment and treatment of the body when it is injured, painful and/or not functioning optimally.
I take a holistic approach to assessment and treatment in order to determine the best place in the body to get to the root of the problem. I prefer to use hands on techniques like manual therapy and myofascial release, as well as needling techniques like acupuncture and intramuscular stimulation. Home exercises help to maintain and progress the gains made in the session.
Treating the problem directly, just not the symptoms, resolves injuries more quickly.
Although they have a role in the treatment of acute injuries, I often find that electrotherapeutic modalities (such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, etc.) are over used. Furthermore, they do not treat biomechanical faults (such as stiff or hypermobile joints) or muscle imbalances which can often be a key factor in musculoskeletal pain.
I am a registered physiotherapist who has completed extensive post-graduate training in needling techniques and manual thearpy. I have completed the Upper and Lower Quadrant Manual Therapy level 3 courses in pursuit of the Diploma of Advanced Orthopaedic Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy Course as well as being both UBC Chan Gunn IMS certified and Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute certified.
I am also trained in the Integrated Systems Model (Lee & Lee) and is a certified K-taping therapist.
I have a keen interest in helping people manage their injuries and symptoms, returning them to their regular activities while minimizing risk of re-injury. I enjoy treating people of all abilities and I have experience treating a wide range of conditions such as repetitive overuse, arthritis, whiplash and sports injuries.
I have been fascinated by the way people move for most of my life, starting from when I was a young athlete in modern pentathlon. After years of competing nationally and internationally in fencing and shooting, I decided to turn my interest in the human body into a career. I completed my undergraduate degree in Science (Biology) and Psychology at the University of British Columbia, then went on to attain a Masters of Science in Physiotherapy from the University of Toronto.
In my free time I enjoy running, rock climbing, skiing, and cycling.
