America's Oldest Record Store

About

Rinehart's Music & Video, The Oldest Record Store in America, has been selling records since 1897.

Description

Edwin S. Rinehart (1864-1931) settled in Kirksville having married Mary, the daughter of Adair County pioneer settlers Columbus T and Catherine Rice. E.S. was a classmate and friend of Major Harboard (who was in charge of supplies in France during World War I and became president of the Radio Corporation of America) while attending the Kansas State Agricultural College at Manhattan. This friendship was to greatly influence E.S.’s career. His primary occupation was as an electrical engineer and as such he helped to build the telegraph line along the Santa Fe Railway from Kansas City to Chicago. And then when the great Northern Railroad extended west from St. Paul he was in charge of the Western Union linemen. 1892 found him back in Chicago helping wire the World’s Fair Buildings for electricity. He and his friends left Chicago the same year and participated in the Oklahoma land rush into the Cherokee Strip. He was engaged in installing the initial public lighting system in St. Louis, Missouri and the amount of work available there kept him busy until 1899 when the men backing the installation of electricity in Kirksville sent for him to return. The man originally hired was deemed unsuitable and E.S. Rinehart was brought back to finish the work. He agreed and was engaged as manager of the plant. He wired most all of the older and more important buildings in Kirksville, including the courthouse, the original Baldwin Hall, and the A.S.O. campus and hospitals. He was also one of the original participants in Kirksville’s first telephone company. 1897 found him located in what is now known as the Family Theatre Building along with his brother Rupert who had located The Rinehart News Stand there. It is then that E.S. added phonographs to his inventory of sheet music; victrola records; wax cylinders and players and by 1907 he was solely engaged in selling Pianos, Phonographs and Music. At his death in 1931 Rinehart’s Music was merged with his brother’s Rinehart News Agency.

I felt it was a weird and strange place. I’m sure he is knowledgeable, though. I took some items in to inquire about selling them onetime, but his offer was so low it was funny. Just not for me. I took my things and left.
really cool merchandise, a little overpriced but the shopping experience is fun
Absolutely love this place, owner is honest about what he has, and what he's willing to pay if you bring in something. Its a very interesting and vast variety of amazing stuff. And some truly serious collector grade items. My only complaint is the lack of cheaper action figures/parts/accessories. So for that reason alone I give it 4stars...BUT! For a outta towner wanting to see some cool stuff or real collectors of higher end pieces such as statues/figurines/comics/classic gaming systems- 5stars hands down.
The man who runs the place is always nice to customers, and they have a very large selection of items. That being said, their trade ins are often rip offs, where you'll get $5 for a game and see it marked as $50.
This place is awesome! I found a Dance Dance Revolution mat for the Wii here and it works perfectly. I've been searching for one for years and have had no luck until today. The prices are reasonable for the items in store when you consider the fact they're often vintage or hard to find pieces. If you're a vintage game/music/film enthusiast you HAVE to check this place out! They also have collectible items such as figurines and original anime vhs tapes and manga. The owner was also super kind and helpful to me and my friends. I highly recommend you give this place a look I somehow forgot to mention that there is also a cat named Victoria who lives at the shop. She is a sweetheart but has allergies so only pet her if you don't have on any irritants such as lotion or hand sanitizer on you
This store is a genuine hole in the wall. Very need retro things like vinyls and games. Everything is kinda pricey though. Probably due to being a small business. Overall, I love this place!
Owner is a nice guy and he has a lot of collectibles and memorabilia, a lot of video games for a lot of different platform's and a lot of movie's. Doesn't accept debit card or personal checks. So bring plenty of cash.
I recently stopped by Rinehart's for the first time in a few years. The owner was a lot easier to deal with than my last few visits and I even bought a few things. Rinehart's could be so much better than it is with just a little work, cleaning, and maybe run some sales to move stagnant inventory. The layers of junk on top of the CDs & some of the records so deep you can't dig through without spending a considerable amount of time moving stuff around is frustrating.
Sooooo.... What? Really awkward shopping experience. Looks like it may be neat from the window display, but inside is creepy. Very old and creeky, how is the building still standing? Smells strange, and full of questionable and some downright deplorable items. I wasn't sure if everything offered for sale is even legal. The owner boasted about being the oldest record store in the world. Well, yep, I'm sure, and nothing had changed since it opened. After finally breaking away from his long winded self exultation I was finally able to escape out the front door. Do yourself a favor, don't go in.
Taking in vhs movies as I replace them with DVD versions. I have an old PlayStation. There are lots of old gaming stuff in the store. The owner Carl has resurfaced a few DVDs for me. He gives me about 50 cents a tape in store credit if he doesn't have the movie in stock. Has movies and books on sale sometimes outside the store. Bought the Ring and two or three others for $3 apiece. Most of the DVDs are 10, VHS 5. Stop in and see his if nothing else
