American Orchestras Summit II -- A Maverick Collaboration: Listening, Learning, and Making Great Music -- March 21–23, 2012 at the University of Michigan
American Orchestras Summit II
A Maverick Collaboration:
Listening, Learning, and Making Great Music
March 21–23, 2012
University of Michigan
Co-Hosted by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Arts Enterprise @ UM, and the University Musical Society with support from the Office for the University of Michigan's Vice President for Research and the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
On March 21–23, 2012, we will reconvene our discussion of the cultural, social, and professional future of the symphony orchestra in the United States as part of the San Francisco Symphony's American Maverick residency at the University of Michigan. In 2010 the first American Orchestra Summit brought together academics, arts administrators, and music union officials for a landmark conversation. We aim to continue that discussion in hopes of identifying what's working in the industry today and modeling ideas and programs old and new that are succeeding.
Arts administrators, educators, and musicians will partner to address such issues as productive collaboration, serving our audiences and communities, and the training of the professional musician in the 21st century.
Confirmed participants include: Ayden Adler (Exec. Dir., Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Orchestra), Brent Assink (Exec. Dir. San Francisco Symphony), Jennifer Barlament (Kalamazoo Symphony), Joseph Horowitz (writer and consultant), Susan Key (Keeping Score, San Francisco Symphony), Kenneth Kiesler (Director of Orchestras, University of Michigan), Bruce Ridge (Chairman, ICSOM), Rick Robinson (Detroit Symphony & Cut Time Players), Jesse Rosen (president, League of American Orchestras), and Peter Witte (dean, School of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City).
Michael Tilson Thomas will lead the musicians of the San Francisco Symphony in four performances presented by the University Musical Society and showcasing "American Mavericks" as part of a national tour celebrating the orchestra's centennial.
We invite you to register for the conference and to participate as an audience member, become involved as a blogger, or contribute discussion questions. Email [email protected] if you have questions not addressed by the information on this website.
