Amherst Karate Center
"Formerly Amherst Karate Studio, Determined Martial Arts was founded in 1991 with the mission to encourage, challenge, and inspire our students to be strong & confident through high quality martial arts training. We are a family-oriented school with the goal of making everyone feel welcome. We meet every student where he or she is to help them grow - whether that means developing coordination, working on focus/self-control, or working around injuries. We don't celebrate mediocrity. In other words, we don't hand out participation trophies. We meet every student where they are, but we also make it clear that they will have to work hard to achieve their goals here."

Our son loves going to class and is quickly growing in coordination and confidence. Mr. Jones is a wonderful teacher - balancing discipline and fun - that all the kids look up to. Also, having the space downstairs to watch the class three different camera angles! with wifi and enough room to keep little siblings occupied is an amazing benefit. We are thrilled to be part of the AKS community.
Our daughter is loving her karate lessons at Amherst Karate Studio. She has only just started but already feels empowered and more confident. Mr. Jones is such a kind and patient teacher.
I am beyond happy with my and my daughter's experience at Amherst Karate Studio. She has a lot of things going on extreme anxiety and ADHD being just 2 of the things and they work so hard to make her comfortable and work with where she is at instead of pushing her to keep up with everyone else. She is pushed when necessary but never more than she can handle. I've also already heard of positive improvements from her school since she has started karate. After talking with the employees I've learned that they have staff there that have some background in child development and special education not sure of the extent but it still counts. I have also had amazing customer service when I've had questions or needed help in anyway. I highly recommend Amherst Karate Studio!
We've stuck with AKS for nearly 4 years now and have no regrets. I live closer to other popular karate studios but choose the longer drive because AKS is worth it. I really like karate for my oldest son because it is a physical activity that is not too competitive and focused on individual improvement. I really like how the head instructor, Mr. Jones, inspires my son to be better in all aspects of life. I recommend AKS to all my friends looking for a karate program for their kids.
Jed and the entire AKS family are amazing. AKS has not only shown our son the ability to maintain a calm body and calm mind, but has bestowed the ability to persevere through any situation he is presented with. The AKS team are all kind, always welcoming, and encourage a growth mindset. Our son was sick one week and Jed and his team sent a care package home to ensure our son knew they were thinking of him and wished him a speedy recovery. Who else in today's world is doing that for their customers??? Thank you Jed and team for allowing our family to be part of ours and for all of the good you do in our community!
My son Damien has been at Amherst Karate over two years. He has an iep and a developmental delay and he has grown amazingly there with focus and dedication. Mr Jones and staff has done an amazing job.
My son started at AKS last year. He was struggling with emotional issues and how to react appropriately in challenging situations. We have seen some real improvement in his attitude and how he responds when he’s faced with a challenging situation. He is very goal driven and earning his stripes and moving up in belts is a great driver for him. The culture of the school is great and it is super family oriented providing events the whole family can participate in and enjoy. My other son has since joined and they both love it very much!
My son has been going to AKS for about 8 months. I wasn't sure he'd stick with it when we first started but he absolutely loves it. He looks forward to each class and the excitement he has about learning "new moves" and working with his instructors is truly a joy to see. Highly recommend AKS for the wonderful instructors and the care with which they foster each child's growth.
$99 bi-weekly. Sounds like a lot at first, but they offer 2+ classes per week, including classes that can have parents learn with kids. Big on family, respect, and self-confidence. Brought my son here and he instantly loved it. Highly recommended! Later Addition - My son did his first lesson and LOVED IT. The teachings are incredible and my daughter wants to join now. If you have a child in need of self-confidence, discipline, bullying defense, or just energy burning and more of course I continue to reccomend this place.
Great, family focused school. The instructors get to know the students on an individual level, meeting then where they are and puzzling out the best way to teach each student in conjunction with one another. There is a balance of discipline and fun, keeping students focused and engaged, while teaching them to respect themselves and others. Amherst Karate Studio has also done an amazing job maintaining flexibility, professionalism, and a positive attitude throughout the pandemic, teaching their students not to focus on what they can't do, but to focus on what they can and are doing.
