Ardastra Gardens was opened in 1937 though the work of the Jamaican horticulturist, Hedley Vivian Edwards. The word 'Ardastra' is from the Latin Ardua astrum, which means “Striving for the stars”.
Flamingos were brought to the gardens by the government of the Bahamas in the 1950s, with the intention of breeding them as flamingos had become rare in The Bahamas.
In 1982, Ardastra Gardens was bought by a Bahamian, Mr. Norman Solomon, who created the first and zoo only in The Bahamas. What began as a botanical garden is now Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre.
Ardastra is home to about 250 animals (mainly birds) and is best known for its flamingos.
