Was out looking for place near ocean for good piece of fish. Stumbled on this place &"plain" atmosphere made it seem welcoming. Unfortunately landed on day when a friend of owner showed up w/ his significant other. Felt pretty much ignored. Fish & chips were nice. Owner acted like I should thank God for this particular piece of fish they had gotten up at 4:00 a.m. to have. Fries were prepared as requested. Cole slaw tasted homemade. Could have been more. Would have been if they had skipped lettuce bed serving no purpose. Same w/ fish. Still portions ok. Price VERY unreasonable. No senior discount. Don't take credit cards but have independent ATM. So they won't pay for card fee but they'll let you pay. All in all very disappointing. Guess it's a place for the owner's pals who like loud place that makes them feel they're at Mel's Diner. I won't be back.
A&P is a destination. The food is good as another reviewer has said, but pricey. Service is generally friendly. Been going there for over a decade and while it can be inconvenient to pay with cash, the food and ocean has always made it worthwhile. But I just had a most unpleasant experience there and I hope the owner changes this policy. My wife and I decided to stop in a get a quick bite, A&P was about half full and we were not too hungry so decided to share a meal with a side. The server told us that there would be a charge to split a meal. So I told her we could just share off the same plate. When she brought our meal, she brought just one fork and one napkin. My wife asked if she could have a fork and was told it would cost her $2.95. It was absolutely humiliating, and I could not even bring myself to talk to the server afterwards. We finished our meal and paid for the extra fork, our tip was reflective of the experience. After being a customer for so long, I am pretty sure it will be a while before I return there since there are now other breakfast places on Bryant Rock.
Food is okay. If you are not a local, expect to wait an hour or more after placing your order to get food while the regulars get their orders within 15 minutes. It takes more than bragging about how Oprah once dined there to make up for this kind of discrimination. Thanks to this place, I will not risk wasting my time eating at a place I heard about on Phantom Gourmet. I can at least trust restaurants inside the Boston city limits to be welcoming. As for all these snobby towns by the ocean, whether on the North Shore or South Shore, don't be surprised if you experience pretense and discrimination if you don't have a New England accent. Wicked sucky. Reminds me of dining in Santa Barbara or Malibu.
Always busy, always delicious, fresh ingredients, service with a smile. Breakfast and lunch only. Cash only. Worth the wait, if there is one. Dee, the owner is personable and always on hand. Regulars are welcomed like old friends. The signature dishes are amazing!
Always jammed because the food is always so good. Cash only and the wait staff are "colorful". Many famous people come for the abuse. I will be next.
Great little breakfast dive, fun and great food.
