Migraines take many forms. Migraines, more than a headache!
One mission of the Association of Migraine Disorders is to raise the general public’s awareness of migraine disease and how it is associated with many more symptoms than only intense headaches with and without auras.
It has been estimated that 15% of migraineurs have symptoms without pain. It is possible that there are common underlying neurologic defects affecting different parts of the nervous system. There appear to be multiple potential genetic defects in nerve function that render neurons hypersensitive and reactive to various stimuli, such as stress, barometric pressure or hormonal changes. Other migraineurs do not have the episodic events of an attack but have more constant low-intensity symptoms.
This hypersensitivity of the nervous system can interrupt the normal way that we see the world, maintain our balance, hear, smell and taste. This problem may be affecting other parts of the brain that control our body temperature and our mood, our ability to sleep, to think and to remember. It may be the same neuropathy that causes fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, cyclic vomiting.
The mission of the Association of Migraine Disorders is to end the suffering from migraine illness through collaboration, education, research and support.
