As an outdoor facility to see nature up close, along the Kishwaukee River, this is very accessible and fun. Went here on my child's school trip as a chaperone. I got to see a fun age appropriate team building exercise the kids loved it! A great resource for learning about animals and nature. Here are some pics, enjoy.
A great park to visit a d run the beautiful trails.
We really enjoy taking our dog to walk through the trails at Atwood Center and the Birds of Prey are always a must see. The only issue I have with the trails is that they are not well marked and some of them are a wee bit overgrown. Nevertheless one of the main trails is pretty straightforward and goes through some lovely forest trails.
Really fun trails to walk. They have old training courses you can play on. The suspension bridge is fun to walk across. Birds of prey exhibit is very interesting. Btw all the birds were unable to survive in the wild on their own.
I had a field trip here in 6th grade 4 years ago the facility and trails were really nice and the workers were good too. I just wish the teacher’s would give us free time to walk around the trails.
Fun for the family on dog friendly trails. I wish the trail entrances were clearly marked. And I wish each spot where the trail has options to take was marked so you could just follow that and not worry about how far away you were going with little kids that needed to be able to make it back. The raptors were fun to look at. I wish there were signs by each animal talking about the species, and saying why each animal was there and couldn't be released. Seems like 2 missed enviro ed opportunities missed by not having signs. My five year old son, our dog, and I enjoyed our time here. I recommend finding your way to the bridge over the river.
Wonderful place to hike and see the bird experience. The bridge over the Kishwaukee River is gives a great view!
We've visited Atwood a lot for walking in the warmer months, but we'd learned that snow shoeing was something suggested through the 815 Outside bingo challenge, and that Atwood center offered rentals. Made a reservation and headed out. Check in was easy and we were pointed toward some of the more scenic trails to try. It was a bit of a workout and we enjoyed it quite a lot!
A hidden gem in Rockford! What a cool place! I've only been here once so far, but I definitely plan to return. The birds of prey exhibit is fascinating, so cool to be able to be up close with those large predators. The beautiful wooded area has tons of paths, including mountain biking, snowshoeing, and hiking trails. The historic area is eerily interesting, and I really appreciate the way they highlight the prominent figures of that past. The facility and grounds are very well kept and apparently offer camp experiences to kids. I can't wait to take advantage of such a cool place as the weather gets nicer!
Beautiful area for the birds who wouldn't survive in the wild.
