Augusta Boxing Club is committed to keeping our youth off the streets. Our motto is "It's better to bleed in the gym than bleed in the streets."
The Augusta Boxing Club (ABC), with assistance from the area law enforcement agencies, is structured as an after school/community support organization with a goal to curtail drug abuse and crime among young adults and children (via an athletic enterprise). This program specifically uses boxing as a tool to steer troubled youth off the streets and into a structured environment that builds confidence, develops self-discipline, instills a strong work ethic and teaches them to integrate and function within a team (critical traits required to succeed as an adult). In its 40 year history, thousands of children and young adults have benefited from their participation in this program. This, as the intended consequence, has benefited our community. The program is primarily preventative in nature with the majority of the children having no prior contact with the court system.
ABC goes beyond the athletic aspects of the program and provides tutoring, drug counseling, a computer lab/study room, etc. In addition, we take the athletes on field trips and require attendance at a variety of educational programs. Through the boxing tournaments, many of our participants have had the opportunity to travel extensively in the United States and abroad. Several members of our team have qualified to represent the United States Olympic Boxing Association and have competed in locations such as Russia, Germany, Sweden, Poland and England (opportunities rarely afforded to disadvantaged kids in economically depressed areas of our community).
