Austin Convention Center

Description

The Neal Kocurek Memorial Austin Convention Center is a multi-purpose convention center located in Austin, Texas. The building is the home of the Texas Rollergirls, and was also home to the Austin Toros basketball team, until their move to the Cedar Park Center in nearby Cedar Park in 2010.HistoryIn the early 1980s civic leaders became concerned that Austin was being passed over as a site for major conventions because the city's main event facility, Palmer Auditorium, was too small. In 1983 the city council unveiled a concept for a $35 million convention center as part of a $350 million complex of hotels and parkland on the south shore of Town Lake (now Lady Bird Lake). Resistance to this plan by neighborhood groups near the proposed site and downtown business leaders caused the city to consider several other sites, finally choosing a downtown site near Waller Creek for construction. Financing was provided for by a US$69 million bond sale, approved by referendum on July 29, 1989. The grand opening ceremony took place on July 4, 1992.On September 1, 1999, construction began on an expansion aimed at nearly doubling the size of the facility from 441000sqft to 881400sqft. The grand reopening took place on May 18, 2002. The enlarged Convention Center's five exhibit halls have a combined 247052sqft of column-free space. There are 54 meeting rooms and two ballrooms, including one of the largest ballrooms in Texas with 40510sqft.

"The Austin Convention Center is a USGBC LEED Gold EB certified venue located in the heart of Austin, Texas, the capital of the Lone Star State. We are based downtown comfortably situated amongst a high density of hotels with 11,000 guest rooms."

The Austin Convention Center is a massive venue located in downtown. The facility handled event fantastically, everything was clean, including the restrooms. There are many great places to eat nearby as well quality hotels, as other other attractions. Thank you.
Large location with plenty of rooms. Free wifi, clean, and well organized. There is a business center for printing and using computers. There are meeting rooms that were open during the conference, not sure if they are open all the time for public use. Great location near many hotels a d walking distance!
Convention center rooms vary greatly on size. Furthermore, the overall layout is very long. You may spend a considerable amount of time walking between rooms. Elevators are tucked away and difficult to locate at times. Be prepared to refer to the map to guide you.
Anyone making a delivery, your BEST bet will be contacting Mr. Tim Howell ahead of time. I promise, things will go by much more smoother. It’s a very busy area and it’s not a lot of space for truckers. If you’re coming off of 35, exit Chavez and make that right on Red River. Loading docs are to your left. It’s so busy, you really can’t miss it.
Good setup. Love the above level walkways connecting hotels. The Fairmont walkway was closed on the hotel side. Lecture rooms and ballrooms on the same level. Many bathrooms.
This place is huge!!!!! It is very well organized and connected to Hilton. The security was very helpful. I met Matthew and he walked me around to make sure I could find all of my sessions. I actually love visiting Austin.
Very nice and clean convention center inside; a million scooters laying around outside. Overall a great venue for conventions!
