Austin Mic Exchange started as an open mic in 2012, but has since become much more -- an events booking company, a community support foundation, an advocate for musician's rights, and the founder of Weird City Fest, Austin's annual first hip hop festival.
AMX was originally founded by Adam Protextor (p-teK) and Leah Manners (KOOP Radio) in September 2012 as a weekly hip-hop open mic night at Spider House Ballroom. Despite the substantial growth, the essential belief behind it has stayed the same -- "all emcees welcome". Our goal is to create opportunities for Austin hip-hop artists no matter their level of experience, medium of creation, age, race, or creed. We strive to unite all artists and fans in order to provide a platform for artists to showcase their material, a forum for them to network and collaborate with their peers, and a chance for them to gain experience. Our goal is to unite the incredibly talented hip-hop scene in Austin and to provide young artists with the tools to grow. It's time the Live Music Capitol of the World was on the map for hip-hop. We run multiple events in Austin:
WEEKLY OPEN MIC
WHEN: Every Wednesday night at 11 PM
WHERE: Spider House Ballroom
AGES: All ages. 21+ Free, 16+ $3
WHAT: An open mic night for aspiring and independent hip-hop emcees in Austin, TX. For 2 hours absolutely anybody is welcome to sign in, take the stage, and perform a track of their own or freestyle over a live beat spun by a live DJ. Just show up before 11 to get on the list to perform.
THE HOT CONVERSATION PODCAST
WHEN: Every Friday
WHAT: A weekly podcast hosted by Protextor and DJ JRo that throws traditional interviews out the window in favor of improvised conversations with guests representing the best in Austin music, art, and creativity.

WHAT: We don't just do open mics and shows at AMX, we also really like to throw parties. Whether its our special SXSW week events, rap battles, or block parties, our goal is to have a good time and represent the scene doing it. To give brand-new, established, or aspiring voices a chance to trade ideas, show off their talent, get feedback from peers, and make new fans. Austin's live music scene is a booming and wonderful thing, but too often indie hip-hop musicians don't get their chance to be heard. The Austin Mic Exchange aims to create an environment of pure democracy where anybody can showcase their work and help to cultivate the small but fiercely active hip-hop community in Austin, Texas. So whether you've been gigging out for 5 years or just wrote your first verse, come get on stage and show us what you got. Love, support, and hip-hop.
