Went this past Sunday and it was hands down one of the worst meals I have ever had. They don't take credit or debit cards and since it was brunch you get whatever they want to serve you. No menu. They started with fruit. Brown pineapple and rotten grapes served with oranges on a bed of salad lettuce. The grapes were burried under the other stuff on the plate, I guess so we wouldn't notice. Next was a cup of pumpkin curry soup. My wife said it was okay, I didn't eat it. Their bread was great A hearty homemade loaf. Probably the best thing we were served. The main course was 2 plates one had prime rib. None seasoned grey in color dull in taste. I think they boiled it. It was on top of some fried potatoes that didn't appear to be so fresh. There was also a corner piece of something served on top of plain spaghetti? You could tell it had been take from a casserole dish. This turned out to be a chicken thigh baked into some type of stuffing. This had to be left over from earlier in the week. It wasn't fresh. There was also some fried green tomatoes and a couple of pieces of ham that tasted wild for some reason. I love food but I do not understand this combination.? The other smaller plate had 2 big shrimp on top of a terrible piece of fish that was on top of what seemed to be left over rice. The 2 shrimp we're good the fish was awful and the rice was nasty. At this point we were ready to just pay and go but we still had desert coming. It was a piece of cake with Cherry's and almonds. Not anything to brag about. This place has a ton of potential and it is off the beaten path. But it seems like it's better days are behind it. We paid and left a tip but we'll never go back. *There was also a salad which was good the house dressing really was awesome. The sauce for the fruit was some type. Of really loud spiced creamy stuff. Not sweet. Sorry I didn't take photos of the main course. I was kinda blown away by what I was served.
We went on a Saturday evening. The place had just a couple of cars in the parking lot. My father in law went in and asked for a menu and asked if they took credit cards. They said no on credit cards and handed him a menu. We looked over the menu and walked in. Once we walked in, it was like we were second rate people. The lady quickly said that she could not serve us. We asked why and they said that they only take reservations. We explained that the sign said they were open for business and that they were not even busy. The lady then tells us that they had reservations and could not fit us in. Very misleading and unwelcoming. There prices are kind of high as well. Stay clear of this place!
Acted like we were a bother. Empty resteraunt and wanted our reservations. 20 minutes to take order and the high priced burgers were oily and fries were nasty. Pretzel bun was too tough to bite thru. Staff should eat their own cooking again.
Must order the potato pancakes appetizer. Amazing! We love our annual trip to Bacara's. Don't let the appearance on the outside deter you from trying this place.
For an authentic taste of Germany, I highly recommend this hidden gem on the Cumberland Plateau. Chef Kurt offers a different menu every night, depending on local ingredients available and his mood. Each time I visit is an adventure and I have always been delighted. Located inside an 1800s school house, the decor takes you back to long ago. Such a charming restaurant with delicious food.
If I could rate it lower I would. We got there and it was 30 degrees outside. Their heat was out and they were using propane tanks to heat sections at a time. It was a cute cozy looking restaurant with a lot of history behind it as it was 130 years old. We decided to eat there anyways. The waitresses were nice, but that is the only good thing I can say about the experience. They did not tell us beforehand, but they were out of almost everything on the menu except for all of the high priced dishes. No hamburgers whatsoever. So, you had to either order an appetizer or some thing that was $15+. We decided to get ribeyes for ourselves my boyfriend and I and chicken tenders for my 3 and 7 year old. We waited an hour before we even got our food. There were only two other families in the restaurant. The chicken tenders came out first on a pile of fruit that looked like it was a week old and had been defrosted and reheated. Not something you would order for a child anyways, but on top of that it tasted terrible. My brother-in-law ordered the same thing and refused it because when it got to the table it appeared to have a beard hair on it. My kids wouldn't eat it at all. That was $8 per plate down the drain. The ribeyes we ordered were actually New York strips. They were bland and dry, and tasted terrible. We ordered both of them medium rare, but they were still so tough I could barely cut mine. The veggies that came with it tasted freezer burnt. My dog will be getting my steak when I get home. The bill was $71 and some change. We complained about the food and literally everything we were served, yet the chef also the owner I'm assuming insisted that the vegetables had just been picked that morning the day after Christmas. They wouldn't budge on the price. So, we literally left two full plates of chicken and took home a steak that was terrible. I highly do not reccomend. And, well never return.
I have always had a good experience here....until Saturday night. I had told my son how good it was. From the moment we walked in it was a disaster. We had a 5:30 reservation that was changed from 6:00. That was no problem, however the others that had a 6:00 were early. The waitress couldn’t quit complaining about it. We were seated and served a salad. She kept repeating how bad it was that the others were early and she would get our soup as soon as possible. After NEVER getting our soup, she brought our medium rare steaks out that were completely without any red or even pink. She acted upset with US. My filet was returned and had been pressed instead of grilled. My son ordered medium rare prime rib. His took longer than my filet!! Prime rib?? The whole experience was such a let down.
Not the experience I was expecting from a 4+ star restaurant. Gave old dry fruit bread and old not fresh fruit that had ants crawling all over it. Then gave soup with dead ants floating in it. The main course was alright, not food I’d pick out but on a Sunday for “brunch” you get the only meal they serve. Prime rib, chicken, and salmon. Not what I was expecting for brunch. Maybe a dinner. Got through that meal with what we hope was no problems. At that point they bring out the cake. All seemed well, until we looked at the cheese cake icing. Covered in mold. Every one of our pieces. At this point we had had enough. We told the waitress and she talked to the manager and he took $10 off of our $80 meal. From the terrible meal we had been served, we felt insulted and confronted the manager ourselves, he claimed there was no mold, but when we go to show him the proof, he just throws his hands up and tells us we didn’t need to pay. All in all, this could have been a decent experience if the food hadn’t been so poorly cared for. Food covered in ants. Non fresh fruit and bread. Sub par dinner entrees for a brunch. And as the icing on the cake, mold. Pun intended. For a restaurant that people said they enjoy, my family had a terrible experience that prevents us from ever returning.
We love this place. We look forward to it every year while on vacation. This year was disappointing. It was the 4th of July and the chef's doghe is not inside the restaurant who lays outside was freaked out due to fireworks. The place needed a good scrubbing. The steak was fantastic. My salad had so many bad leaves I did not eat it. Which was sad because the homemade bleu cheese dressing is the bomb. The bread we look forward too was stale and cold. The homestyle fries were not fully cooked. The potatoes were still slightly crunchy. You get great portions here. For a family of 4 it is about 125.00. Maybe the chef did not feel well, but it was def off this year, which is a shame.
We had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately, the waitress being friendly was the only positive thing I have to say about the place. Some of the food tasted rotten, the server accidentally dumped hot chocolate on me, and they didn’t have electricity in the bathroom and water pressure was extremely low in the sink of the other one. There was also no heat still...from what I’m reading it’s been out for awhile. No Covid precautions were taken, and as a healthcare provider who has seen a lot of Covid death, this was disappointing to see.
