Description

I cannot say enough good things about Backcountry BBQ. Between the fast and friendly service, inexpensive but delicious food, and country atmosphere, you can't go wrong. My favorite time to go is for lunch because they have great specials, mainly the small sirloin that comes with a side house salad, French fries and hushpuppies (or a steak roll) for only $5. You can't beat that deal anywhere else. The BBQ is almost moist and tasty with or without their signature dip. When I'm wanting something a little lighter, I go for the BBQ salad. The small salad is still a big portion (the large feeds me for two meals!) with a healthy serving of BBQ on top.

If you want something filling, the big cheeseburger with all the fixings is the way to go. The lunch special comes with french fries and bakes beans.

To finish an already amazing meal, one mustn't miss the homemade banana pudding. It is truly the best I've ever eaten.

This local joint gets a lot of local regulars since it's not in mainstream Lexington, but if you're passing through the area, it is not to be missed.

Great place to eat and get the real deal. Love the slaw, hush puppies, and chopped BBQ. A must if your in the area.

While relatively new by Lexington area standards (operating since 1984) this place continues to produce outstanding pork barbecue - cooked over wood, it is tender moist, and with some nice smokiness. It is well sauced out of the kitchen, and the slaw is one of my favorites of this type (the Red BBQ Slaw, their White is just ok).

The Pork Skin Sandwich here is simply the best. The skins are large, full of crunch, and don't go all soggy in the slaw, which really adds to this sandwich. The Chili Dog here is not bad, just a little on the sweet side for my taste. The Hushpuppies are nice, little crunchy balls of great flavor - they are just like the ones served at Cook's, on the other side of the county.

Great little bitty place to eat.
We love all the food at Backcountry, which is rare for me to say about any place. They have a limited but satisfying menu with mostly barbeque items and sandwiches. They have the best char-grilled hamburger steak in our area. Our fave is the 20 oz. sirloin steak for two and is a good value. We enjoy the salad bar that comes with the steak. The bbq chicken is a treat. Service is usually very attentive. Don't miss the banana pudding which was voted best in the county.

Tasty bbq. I highly recommend. Very casual atmosphere, fairly quiet place - but the focus is on the bbq. Very moist and tender.

The chopped BBQ was good, not much of a smoke flavor, but the meat was moist. THE BEST HUSH PUPPIES WE'VE EVER HAD! They were smaller so you got more of that cripsy yumminess from the outsides. Very friendly and fast service, and can't beat the prices!!!!

I go to Restaurants for the food. Lexington Barbeque is world famous so I had to ask the hotel manager, a local, where he ate barbeque. He steered me to this restaurant off the beaten path and I was not disappointed! It is rustic but it was packed with locals, not tourists. That is its best endorsement! The food was hot, delicious, and inexpensive. We will return again!

I stopped in for lunch today based on reviews from a few different websites. I couldn't be more satisfied with the meal, service, prices, or location. It's right off I-85 just inside Lexington city limits.I had the chopped BBQ special and my children had the burgers (one small & one large) they ate their meal, then the rest of mine! It was a lot of food. The BBQ special and small bacon burger was $5 and the large bacon burger was $6.50. Tea was amazing and refills were often! One of the best parts of this restaurant was the service. It is family owned and operated and they really care that you enjoy your meal. I brought home a chicken plate, 2 BBQ plates, and a pound of chopped BBQ. Trust me when I say it will be plenty for 6 people tomorrow night! Oh, and the BBQ was the best I've ever had!!!!! I can't wait to go back next time I'm up that way.

I live in Lexington and this place is a staple. Best BBQ in town as well as the best steak. The steaks are always juicy and you can't beat the price. A must try for everyone!!

This was simply the best barbecue we've ever had. We decided to stop by for lunch on our drive home from Charlotte after reading about it in Our State Interstate Eateries by DG Martin. We both had the chopped plate with the slaw and french fries. It was fabulous! The pork was so tender and moist...with a flavorful tangy sauce. The service was excellent and the restaurant filled with locals. We will go back!

I grew up in Davidson County and have eaten at pretty much every BBQ joint around here. Moved away 8 years ago, and this is the first place I come to when I come back home to visit. Not just the best in NC, but this is simply the best pork shoulder BBQ in the world. Period. I get the course chopped tray and some hushpuppies on the side. The steaks and BBQ Chicken are good for a small town smokehouse, too. Do not miss this place if you're passing through from Greensboro to Charlotte. It's the most convenient to the interstate of all the BbQ joints, and the service is friendly and exceptional. Don't expect frills. Just amazing BBQ.

One of the very few BBQ restaurants in Lexington open on Sunday, this little place in the country beats most of the local BBQ competition any day of the week. Great food and prices. Weekly specials are appreciated. We go often for the steak dinner for 2.

We tried the Backcountry Barbeque after reading the Feilding_Melish review.
We were warmly greeted as we entered the door. Dad and I each had a coarse chopped pork plate with baked beans and white slaw. My husband had a coarse chopped plate with red slaw and french fries. And we had fresh, hot, delicious hush puppies. The tender pork is served covered in a tangy red sauce. Both types of slaw are on the sweet side, but very good. The scrumptious baked beans were enhanced with green peppers and bacon.
They have upgraded to plates and flatware.

Best burgers and Steaks!!!! Especially if its the lady who normally cooks them, the burgers are the best in Lexington! Not only that....you can get a 20 oz steak 2 salads, 2 baked potatoes and the best rolls for 14.99!!!! Go here even if you have to go out of your way...the restaurant is not much to look at, it could use some renovating but the food is excellent!

I was lucky enough to find this place via the restaurant list in our GPS just as we approached the exit off I-85, and I'm sure glad we did. When the parking lot is full of what can only be locals, it's a pretty good sign.

Though the place was packed, we were seated very quickly and our drink orders taken immediately. Sweet tea is still somewhat of a novelty for a Yankee, and theirs was good. I had the sliced smoked pork and like most of the items on their menu, it was served in a paper french fry basket along with plastic utensils. Frankly, I wouldn't have cared if it was served on a dirty sock - it was that good. Not a heavy smoked flavor - just enough to let you know it was there, and absolutely the most tender and juicy BBQ'd pork I've ever had. The ketchup/vinegar-based sauce was served on the side and I had the hush puppies instead of the fries. The sauce was like nothing I've ever had. Simply done, and a fantastic compliment to the pork without overpowering it. The kids had chicken tenders and a burger [sigh] and were happy with theirs, also. Wifey had the chopped version of the same pork and it was excellent, also. I think the bill for the 4 of us was $27.

I highly recommend this place as an alternative to the corporate BBQ chains along the interstate. It's different because it's the real thing. Simply done in the local style, without flash or pretense and executed perfectly. If there's better BBQ in the area - please let me know about it and I'll hit it the next time through.
