Baker Allegan Studios & Art Gallery
Baker Allegan Studios is located in the Historic Milling District of Downtown Allegan. This Historic building was originally built by Baker Furniture Factories in 1906 and operated as their warehouse and shipping facility until 1933 when they moved operations to Holland Michigan. When we purchased the building in 2006, it was condemned and approved for demolition. We restored the building ourselves and opened the Gallery in December 2008 and have been growing ever since.
We now represent over 30 West Michigan Artisans in the Gallery and have opened the Fiber Arts Studio of Sow Spun Silk, providing Weaving Classes and Supplies for the Weaving and Spinning Arts. We sell Schacht Weaving Looms and Spinning Wheels and are also now carrying Kromski Spinning Wheels and a nice selection of Roving and Books on the subjects.
We are unique in the fact that we have 3 Weavers Delight Looms, built by the Newcomb Loom Co. that we have set up at all times. These are semi-automatic looms that our customers can weave a Rag Rug or a Towel with no experience or classes, with all materials provided. It is a great way to try out weaving without having to spend a lot of money. Rugs take about an hour per foot, and Towels take about an hour. Check out our web-Site for more info.
We have also begun promoting Concerts at the Griswold Auditorium in an effort to bring a wide range of Arts to the Allegan area. We and other businesses in the City are working hard to bring the City of Allegan into the Arts and Entertainment fold of West Michigan.
