The Baldwin Wallace Men’s Rugby Club has a fine history dating to the late 1970’s. Originally named “The Jesters”, they practiced on Klein Field and played their games at Wallace Lake in the Cleveland Metroparks. The club experienced up and downs in their membership and level of play throughout the 80’s and 90’s. However, in 2012 under strong student leadership, the Men’s Rugby Club resurfaced with vengeance.
Lead by active and engaged BWU student leaders, the Great Lakes Rugby League was formed in 2013. The league now has 20 members, and four conferences in Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The club has USA Rugby certified coaches, string student participation, and excellent financial support from the university.
The Baldwin Wallace Men’s Rugby Club belongs to the 325 member National Small College Rugby Organization. The club consistently fields a strong 25-30 man roster, becoming one of the most competitive and respected small college rugby programs in the Midwest. The club has won three Great Lakes League Championships, and has been a consistent qualifier for the Midwest Championships.
The club continues to build a strong membership through the retention of crossover Baldwin Wallace athletes and the recruitment of high school players. These high school players have come to Baldwin Wallace from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Michigan. All athletes are welcome to join this tremendous club regardless of experience. GO JACKETS RUGBY!
