Ballard and Sons Funeral Homes

About

Ballard and Sons provides exceptional care and service for families in their time of need. Celebrating Life within Funeral Service of the highest standard.

Description

George and Dorothea Ballard came to Middletown in 1949. George had worked for many years as a Funeral Director at Stanley Mortuary and V.T.Davis Funeral Home in New Castle. Dorothea had been director of Nursing Services at Henry County Hospital.

They purchased the Ralph Niblock Funeral Home on Columbia Avenue in Middletown. They soon moved into a partnership with Raymond C. Shirey and purchased the Forrest Fisher Funeral home at 118 South 5th in 1951. This had also been known as the Davis St. John Mortuary.

Mr. Shirey had been in business for many years in Daleville working with his father-in-law, Wilbur Polhemus at the Polhemus and Shirey Mortuary at 8212 South Walnut Street. The partnership prospered and in 1972, George and Dorothea purchased the assets of Mr. Shirey shortly before his death. In 1985, the name was changed to Ballard and Sons Funeral Homes with the inclusion of both sons entering the business; Jon in 1977 and Marty in 1980.

To this day, the Ballard's have maintained the local tradition of funeral service in the area with clean and updated facilities and a caring desire to assist families. Both sons' give much credit for their high standard of care they demand in the profession to their parents who created a ministry of personal care by reaching out to the community, the way the community had reached out to them.

I've known the Ballard family for quite some time and have witnessed them deal with families going through the hardest of times with such empathy and compassion. When I lost my wife this year, one of the first calls we made after family was to Ryan and his team as I knew he would guide me and my family through what was the most difficult day of my life. Their ability to take such an arduous, gut-wrenching task of planning a funeral for a loved one and make it painless reflects the kind of staff Ballard & Sons has. This is the only review I've written where I hope to never have to use them again. In the chance I do, they will again be one of my first calls.
Such a very respectful group of people. Ryan and his crew are the most caring and respectful people ever. They always care for you and your love one. They do everything in their power to make sure everything is right and perfect. They go above and beyond any expectations to meet your wants or needs. I highly recommend them. With my experience using Ballards & sons was an honor for myself and my family. They made sure everyone was at ease and was there for us. They even reach out to myself to check on me and my my family to make sure we are okay or need anything. I promise you won’t find another group who cares or wants to do everything in their powers to make sure every expectation is met.
Great experience during the hardest time of my life. The staff honored every wish we had and went above and beyond to help our day go as smoothly as possible. John and Chrissy were so helpful in the preplanning process and definitely went out of their way to accommodate our needs. John explained details about the process and helped us plan for every upcoming expense. Our funeral director, Shane, was super helpful and friendly about the finishing touches, setting up, and arranging pickup for all of the belongings afterwards. Each and every person was so kind and my family and I will be forever grateful!
Our experience with Ballard and Sons was above our expectations. The care that was given at the beginning to the attentive follow up showed genuine love and concern for the remaining family. Our tears and sadness in our time of loss was consistently met with gentleness and compassion. There was not a detail or request that was missed. Thank you to each one that was part of this process. You deeply touched our hearts.
Our experience with Ballard and Son Funeral Home was a very good one. Shane was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I appreciated that He kept our wishes during the planning of Moms funeral.
John Henderson lead a team of serving minded people to deliver caring, compassionate and complete service for the Rosalie Corbin family on April 7, 2023! Every detail was handled with excellence and the feel of family! Thanks so much to all.
Ballard and sons have taken care of the needs of my family for over 40 years. I recommend their caring services.
Seemed like a nice funeral home and handled my mother and father's funeral. My issue is with the handling of the prepaid death certificates that went to a member of the family that did not need them. I was working on having them sent to my home and instead they were sent to a disgruntled family member. Myself handling my father's will and entire estate had to spend my time and money to get copies you have to make an appointment and spend $12.00 a copy. 10 copies were sent to a person that should not have gotten them.
