Bankhead House & Heritage Center

About

The beautifully restored 1920s home of Congressman William B. Bankhead (father to Tallulah Bankhead) in north Jasper that is now dedicated to the Art, History, and People of Walker County, Alabama, USA

Description

When acquiring the home and stating its purpose, John T. Oliver, Jr., past President and founding Board Member of Walker Area Community Foundation said "It has long been our belief that our town needed a proper place to display and recognize our rich heritage, as well as a place to host cultural events. This colonial revival home - when restored to its original dignity will provide just such a venue. It will provide space for exhibits, art shows, book signings, storytelling and similar events."

We strive each day to showcase the past, present and future of Walker County and the surrounding area through a wide variety of exhibits that change every three to four months along with hosting events, such as Heritage Fun Day, concerts and movie nights.

Because of the Walker Area Community Foundation, the Heritage Center is admission free; however, we are dependent on contributions in order to present our exhibits and events and to provide quality educational programming.

The Heritage Center features:
• Congressional Library and Living Room: Honors the incredible story of 111 years of continuous service in the U.S. Congress by 7 men from small towns in Walker County.
• The Gallery and Dining Room: Serves as the main exhibit changing themes and content approximately every 3 to 4 months.
• A Tribute to our Military Room: Honoring the sacrifice and dedication of Walker County service men and women. Artifacts in this exhibit change periodically.
• Tallulah Bankhead Room: Want to know about the life of Tallulah? Well Dahling, come see a collection of her personal and family artifacts.
• The Walker County Room: Features all types of items from across Walker County celebrating our rich history and bright future. Artifacts in this exhibit change periodically.

SCHOOL TOURS

We believe school tours are an essential part of the educational and cultural enrichment of students of all ages. A visit to the Bankhead House & Heritage Center makes our past, present and future come alive and we want to help enrich a students’ life experience.

Guided school tours are provided free of charge.
Please schedule school group tours at least two weeks in advance. Many times we will have multiple docents to assist with large school groups; therefore, we would appreciate sufficient notice for your tour.

Due to a grant provided by the Walker Area Community Foundation, the Heritage Center is able to provide funding to local schools (Walker County School System and Jasper City Schools) for transportation costs to allow area students to view our exhibits. Don’t you just love things that enhance school curriculum and that teachers can use as a learning tool for students at no cost to a school?
