Aviation Enthusiast Wonderland Barksdale has a really impressive static display. You don't often see large bombers as part of museum displays, but there are multiple huge aircraft here. Several B52's that you can walk under and touch, and an SR-71 that never fails to impress everyone. Prepare to do some walking, as the planes are spread out over a large area. This is an active USAF base, so if you're lucky you'll get to see B52's taking off a few yards away from the displays. Inside the museum there are some really interesting displays one of our favorites was the 9/11 room. You MUST plan ahead if you want to visit. Check out their website, complete and submit the background screening form. The base will reach out to you directly to schedule your visit, base Security will be expecting you'll be on their list.
An average museum with random exhibits and sun-beaten bombers on static display. First off, read the information on their how to access the museum, as it's on Barksdale AFB itself, so you have to go through the gate, etc. Secondly, when I went to the museum, all of the doors were locked despite it being a couple hours after opening and I had to call the phone number listed on their site to get entry. Once inside, the place was underwhelming, be it either the lackluster gift shop or the the haphazardly arranged exhibits. The highlight of the museum is the static aircraft on display, ranging from WWII aircraft such as the B-17 and B-24, to unique cold war aircraft like the Avro Vulcan, and two of the aircraft currently based at Barksdale, the B-52 Stratofortress. The only sad thing about these aircraft is that they're all baking outside in the sun, and it's clear that they've seen better days. I'll give them credit for restoring the paint job on some of the airplanes, but it didn't seem like they did their research on what the paint schemes and finishes should be. My final take on the museum is that it's worth checking out if you're in the area and have some free time, but make the outdoor portion the priority to see.
Very cool place with allot of history, being retired Army aviation I am always interested in all Aviation especially since there would be no Air Force without the Army Air Corps. Nice display of a wide range of aircraft and history.
The walk out to see the planes was long..there are 20 to see. But well worth it. They did do an outer search of our car but was pretty standard operating procedures. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great visit!
Just an okay museum with mixed exhibits and weathered planes on display. On my visit, all the doors were locked and I had to call for entry, even though it was a few hours past opening time. Once inside, the museum didn't live up to my expectations. The exhibits were arranged haphazardly and the gift shop was underwhelming. The standout feature of the museum is the outdoor display of aircrafts, from WWII planes and even some of the planes currently based at Barksdale. The only downside is that these planes are left outside in the sun, and it shows. In conclusion, if you're in the area and have some spare time, the museum is worth checking out, but prioritize the outdoor exhibit
Inside the museum doesn't take long. Outside with the planes can take as long as you want. Very informative.
We had a great time here. It's not a huge museum but its packed with great info and exhibits. They even had a few props with a backdrop to take photos at. We also checked out all the planes displayed outside. It's very nice, I wish we would have checked them out a while ago!
Awesome Air Power Museum located on Barksdale Airforce Base. Located right next to the Barksdale Inn. Make sure you allow for plenty of time to walk around and see all the different airplanes.
The museum is Barksdale AFB/2ND Bomb Wing specific and has a number of photographs, artwork, and aircraft hardware items to relate that history. It is open to the public but be prepared for a minor delay while Security checks your background via drivers license before entering the base proper. No charge at the museum but donations are welcome. The museum is self guided and the indoors portion will take almost an hour if you give due attention to the exhibits. The outdoors portion consists of around 20 or so static displays of aircraft from the B47 and SR71 to B52 and KC135. At least half of them can be walked up to for close inspection. All interesting but remember this is located on an active military installation home to the 8th Air Force and 2nd Bomb Wing, so act accordingly.
We had clearance and passes, but they closed the north gate and we were not allowed on base. We drove from Houston to see this museum. they should have notified us the only access point was closed, because they wanted to take a long weekend. Our tax dollars at work!
