Barn Theatre - School

About

Michigan's oldest professional Equity summer stock theatre company. Barn Theatre School ~ training to apprentices and outreach for children.

Description

Located on a picturesque rolling hillside on M-96 between the cities of Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, the Barn Theatre retains its charming countryside setting and remains the perfect summer outing for the whole family!

We are one of the nation's oldest Equity resident summer-stock theatres as well as a longtime Michigan entertainment destination. Sixty years and over 500 performances under the same management is a benchmark nearly unparalleled in the theatre industry, yet it's a benchmark we boast at the Barn Theatre thanks to founders Jack Ragotzy, an Obie award-winning director, and his wife Betty Ebert Ragotzy. With $875 in their pockets, the Ragotzys founded the Barn in 1946 as the Village Players in nearby Richland. Three years later the company moved into its current home, an abandoned dairy barn, and became the Barn Theatre of Augusta, Michigan. Jack and Betty nurtured the Barn through the years until it became the success western Michigan enjoys today.
The Barn Theatre School for Advanced Theatrical Training was founded to promote the concept that all theatre artists, performers, designers, technicians, stage managers, directors, and art managers have broadly based theatre exposure and experience in the belief that such exposure and experience are the heart of an appreciative and creative relationship between the disciplines of any theatrical enterprise.

The Barn Theatre (School For Advanced Theatrical Training) was created to administer a program of instruction, training, and practical experience in all phases of the preparation and presentation of theatrical productions. The School will also endeavour to bring Theater to disadvantaged and underutilized children, thus providing the possibility of creating the stars of the future by encouraging the children of today.

Mission: The Mission of The Barn Theatre School for Advanced Theatre Training is to provide apprentices with instruction and practical experience in all aspects of theatrical production as they participate in the creation of plays, musicals and musical revues. Additionally, the school offers local students, regardless of ability to pay, life-enriching educational opportunities thru exposure to the arts.

I don't think Google maps existed the last time I visited for a show in 2002. So, glad this place is still around and still putting on amazing shows. Such a fun and enjoyable time, can't believe I've stayed away so long. My loss. The Sherlock Holmes show was a blast. About twenty different characters all played by 5 players. And even better than that, it was eighteen characters played by 3 players. The theater is fantastic with amazing air conditioning. A great venue for a fun show any time.
I've been coming to the Barn Theater with my aunt since I was young. Now, I attend with cousins when I'm in town. It am always impressed with the professionalism of the plays and the down-home personal treatment of this troupe. On the rare occasion that a big name star comes to perform at the Barn, that adds to the excitement of the evening. Thank you one and all for an enjoyable evening.
We love this place! Nothing comes close to what we have as a barn theatre in Holland. Tonight’s show was Clue. We didn’t have any clue as what to expect. It was great again. As always. When we visit Michigan, we try to go here. Unhappy ending… sadly something went very wrong with the after-show reservation. After some discussion with the manage we didn’t feel like staying anymore. Otherwise 5 stars.
We attend 4 to 5 of the shows each season. These young actors are really good and the bar show after the main show really showcases their singing talent. Spectacular! When I heard about the Barn Theater, I attended a show, not expecting it to be great. I was wrong. The actors/entertainers make the experience fabulous. If you enjoy the arts, stop in. You'll be hooked.
What an experience I’ve had at the barn theater. It was my very first time being here after hearing about it for years and years. I finally had the chance to go and see The Wizard Of Oz and let me just tell you it was just phenomenal. So much talent and work put into their shows. I also lost my wallet, but they were so kind to call me back and tell me they found it after me worrying about it for the longest time. I can’t wait to be back and not loose my wallet next time of course thanks for a good show!
TALL OR PLUS SIZE BEWARE Excellent theatre performance and fun venue. If you have long legs and/or are larger than size 16 women’s, make sure you aren’t in a seat on either side - ask if any are available in the middle. There is no leg room see picture and the seats are not plus size friendly. If not for the seating, would return in a heartbeat.
Performance was fun. Seats in the nose-bleed row we were in are WAY too close to the adjacent rows. VERY difficult to move, stand, etc. All in all, it was a pleasant experience.
The management allowed too any small children to this production. I've never seen so many bathroom break of small children and the adults that brought the kids. Unfortunately I sat behind a 2 or 3 year old with his mother, aunt and grandmother. He never sat still. The mother and aunt were very tall women. Between the womens height and moving boy; I stood most of the performance The place was packed with a great attendance. I was in the back balcony. There was a pole that also blocked my left side vision on the stage. There was no toilet paper in the outhouse during intermission and was never filled during intermission! I live in Lansing and grew-up in Battle Creek. The show was good, but I will think twice before this experience again - and the drive. Probably stick with MSU Wharton Center.
Enjoyed the evening, we were there for Baskerville. It was very different from the usual with so few members of the cast playing so many different people. Very good job done by the cast. The Rehearsal Shedd was great as usual.
First live theater I've been to and it was absolutely wonderful. I'll remember 9to5 for many years to come and they have truly captured my heart with their performance. They have also made certain that I will be going to live shows for the foreseeable future. The property boast a outdoor concession booth, a bar, and an after performance cabaret of sorts for dinning and the actors to play around at. I didn't reserve a table early enough but next time for sure. The actors were exquisite, the scenes were well built and orchestrated, and the owner is top notch. It's a family owned production and has been the start of a few well known stars but I'm sure more to come. One memorable moment was when I had an "Oh No" moment and they gave the audience a minute to appreciate my innocent remark. They made us feel apart of the play, too fun.
