History of Barren River Lake:

Established January 1, 1965

Vast forests did not cover all of Kentucky. In the south-central portion of the state an area of open grasslands known as the “Barrens” made a stark contrast to the heavily forested terrain surrounding it. Native Americans had repeatedly burned the forests that once covered the region as a means to stampede and kill big game. These fires created an open savannah that in turn drew all types of wild game to feed off its lush grasses. Buffalo herds migrated eastward across the Mississippi to Illinois, and then to Kentucky. These herds came to the Barrens and multiplied, providing food and clothing for the Indians.

The open lands of the Barrens also drew settlers who found the treeless areas easy to cultivate. Originally the pioneers thought the treeless grasslands infertile because of the lack of forestation. They soon found the soil to be some of the best that they had encountered. Farms and communities soon began to cover the area. In 1798 Barren County became the 37th county of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Taken from parts of Green and Warren counties, Barren consisted of 1,500 square miles. Beginning in 1815, the county had 1,000 square miles taken away to create portions of Allen, Edmonson, Hart, Metcalfe, and Monroe Counties.

Although Barren County had a railroad, most of south-central Kentucky remained isolated. The need for development became a topic for most civic and government organizations. A dam on Barren River had economic potential in the promotion of tourism. By 1960, construction of a 146 foot-high dam began on the river. When completed the dam had created Barren River Lake. The lake covers 10,000 acres and has a shoreline of 141 miles. The Louisville division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the dam. They continue to maintain the lake.

A movement by the people of Barren County to establish a park next to the lake became a reality on January 1, 1965. The state purchased adjoining farms to extend the park site and the Louisville Corps of Engineers donated acreage to round out the park’s boundaries. In 1966 the park constructed a boat dock with a marina. The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, approved a total development project of $3,469,000. A federal grant of $1,734,500 funded 50 percent of the estimated cost.

In 1971 the Louie B. Nunn State Lodge opened. The lodge overlooks the beautiful 10,000-acre lake. Barren River Lake is located in some of Kentucky’s most scenic countryside. On the first weekend in June the park hosts Glasgow Highland Games, a festival celebrating Scottish heritage. Thousands of people attend this popular event each year.

The park is tricky to navigate. Our spot was 79A. All the spots on this side are off level. Way off level. Sire 79A was so off level that we couldn't use our chairs. We just used the picnic table provided. There was a camper van near us that had their front tires almost 3 ft off the ground to get level. The water hook up was 50ft away from our city water inlet and we needed to go buy a longer water hose just to access it. The electricity was close. They have a dump station, showers & laundry on site. It's not too far from restaurants and activities located in Glasgow. The only plus the site had was shade. Playground: Nice play area for kids Restrooms: Multiple restroom locations, nice and clean Dog-friendliness: Plenty of pets Picnic area: Picnic tables at each site. There is a pavilion just outside of the camping area.
Ww just stepped out for a few hours of relaxing at the lake. The atmosphere was nice and the area was clean. The rocks are a bit sharp. But other than that, we enjoyed the day. Playground: There isn't a playground
Everyone.... literally everyone that works here.... was extremely friendly, outgoing and helpful. From the ladies at the front desk, to the restaurant hostess and servers, to Leslie and the folks at the bar/lounge... even the park rangers were quick with a smile and a kind word. We love Barren River Lake State Resort Park!!
An older lodge, but still clean. When we arrived our room smelled like stale cigarettes and smoke, even though it is a non smoking room. Below is a picture from our deck. If the Lodge would cut these two trees, the view from all lodge rooms would be stunning. Picnic area: Lots of playgrounds and picnic areas throughout the park. Beautifully landscaped.
Great place to take the whole family we rented a pavilion for a family reunion it was really nice and then we drove over about a mile to the nice Lake with a beach really nice.
This place was amazing! Great staff and very clean grounds!
Great place. Close as it get to the beach at ocean here in Kentucky. The wake from passing boats in the channel make kind of a natural wave pool. waves nowhere the size of an actual wavepool but fun to sit in and safe for little ones. At 8 and 5, our kids did well. Its maybe 3 foot deep at 20 feet out from shore. They had life jackets, no issues, facilities were nice, would definitely recommend
In area for a few days for biz. Stayed at this property, the hotel has gorgeous lake views and sits on some beautiful property. It’s a wee bit dated and could use a fresh coat of paint but still very nice. Note, hotel restaurant and bar are closed during the week limited hours for off season and the resort is waaaaay out in the middle of nowhere. There’s a Marathon gas station just outside park that serves deli type fare, sammies & fries, pizza, etc. Golf course is gorgeous, along with an outstanding 2.5 mile paved walking/biking trail around the property Can’t say enough about this trail, mostly in wooded areas and killer walking. Beautiful beach, and stables for horseback riding with horses available to ride. The lake itself is a gem, mostly tree lined with some bluffs and cliffs in places. I will definitely be back with my mountain bike & kayak.
Really enjoyed our stay. Real nice park. No WIFI, but good phone reception . Bathroom/showers brand new and very clean.Mark and the host were very helpful.
Great deal of shade... Need to fix some of the sites where the area you park your camper and the area you park your car isn't such a big drop off. My mom fell one night walking back because of the drop off. But other than that it was Nice. A great "beach" swimming area. Fishing areas as well and Golf which I didn't play but course looked nice and my brother said it was Nice! Playground: Small Restrooms: Clean, several stalls and water pressure was good! 3 shower stalls Dog-friendliness: Allowed to have animal, need a leash if pets don't stay with you. Picnic area: Didn't use.
