Barstow Cemetery

About

This cemetery started as a “for profit” cemetery in the 1930s. Serving Barstow and the surrounding areas.

Description

This cemetery started as a “for profit” cemetery in the 1930s. In the mid-1930s all of the interments from the Barstow cemetery were moved to Mountain View’s Block #1. Also, during this period, a cemetery manager had all of the grave markers, headstones, wrought iron fences, etc hauled away. As a consequence there are many unmarked graves in Block #1. In the 1960s San Bernardino County took over operation of the cemetery and continues to operate it today. It is in very good repair and still accepting burials. There are approximately 8,900 interments in this cemetery.

When I buried my Uncle Bill in 81 it was green and trees were full of life it was a sweet cool place to die at... But in 2023.. when I laid to rest my Aunt Carmen, Bill's wife, the place was a desert, with dried-up trees, no grass, dried-up bushes, and very little places to sit and visit your Dead.
Went to the cemetery to visit my grandfather today I'm disappointed he passed several years ago and his head stone is not in the place he was buried it seems like they moved him took his headstone out cuz he was nowhere to be found search the whole place just in case I got confused and forgot but that is not the case no one in my family was notified and not aware he served years in the army and this is how he treated. Will be taking too a lawyer about this issue and please check too see if ur loved one are still there thank you.
Why doesn't the city just hire a person or person's for upkeep on the property. I remember years ago when Mr. Jaramillo worked there and the place always looked nice. I don't know why it looked so good then, but it did. Either way, a memorial park from corner to corner and not just the entrance should look nice and comforting to the eye as it shows respect for those interned there.
I had read much about the cemetary not being well cared for, but I found it less dilapidated than the town itself. Generally it seemed in pretty good shape, especially given that it switched status from for to non profit. In the pair of hours I spent in quiet contemplation & retreat there today I did note that some of the parallel to ground, always for last 50 years or so stones had accumulated leaves & dirt, but in a remote spot prone to such violent winds it is impossible to keep up with debris like dead leaves, you simply do the best you can. As I did, when each time I encountered such a stone I bent to the ground & wiped away the debris, saying aloud "____" name on stone "you deserve to be remembered. Your marker should be visible & legible." I was surprised by the age of some of the markers. The cemetary has only been in operation since 1947, yet I found several stones from the era of the first World War, and at least one from the 1890s. It's no Forest Lawn. And yes, it could do with more care, particularly landscaping/groundkeeping. But given the environment, and the odds they face, 5 people with a cash flow around $150k/annum to attempt to landscape & green a desolate spot of desert AND do the jobs that have traditionally been relegated to the family, keep grave site looking good, for a dearly departed population numbering in the thousands, many of whose families are long departed from the region or life, well, seems to me they're actually doing a lot for many with very little assistance.
You should absolutely be ashamed of what you have done and the lack of finishing this project. I cried when I went to visit my mothers plot, which took me several minutes to find. I can tell you without any doubt her headstone is not on her grave….
Grass is almost dead, weeds taking over and more and more areas just plain dirt. Weeds and crab grass over growing covering headstones. Looks like no one does anything out there. Are we supposed to take our own landscaping tools, fertiliser, and water out there to do the upkeep ourselves?
This is a very nice memorial park. They are affordable and they have a very nice pre-planning package with the Highlands Funeral Home on main street for the funeral or cremation.. They did their best to take care of us. Tom.at the Highlands Funeral home has plots over there also.
County has not fixed water well. Grass is dried and trees are mostly dead. Graves are caving in and not maintained. This is an embarrassment to the community and all the Barstow and Newberry Springs pioneers and war veterans buried there. Bureaucrats and local politicians, shame on you.
The place has been doing there hardest to accommodate to everyone's needs and the well being of the property it's a big project but in the end it will be beautiful
County is not taking care of our cemetery !! SO SAD! Im ashamed of them for not taking care of this after all of the money that people spend on people to bury their family here.
