Beals is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States, located on an island opposite Jonesport. The town was named after Manwaring Beal, an early settler. The population was 508 at the 2010 census.GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 48.33sqmi, of which, 5.62sqmi of it is land and 42.71sqmi is water. The main settlement of Beals is located on Beals Island, which is connected by a bridge across Moosabec Reach to West Jonesport on the mainland. Beals Island is connected to the southeast by a short bridge to Great Wass Island, also within the town of Beals and comprising the Great Wass Island Preserve.Demographics2010 censusAs of the census of 2010, there were 508 people, 228 households, and 147 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 97.8% White, 0.8% African American, 0.8% Native American, and 0.6% from two or more races.There were 228 households of which 23.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.5% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.69.
