Beaver Dam State Park

Description

Beaver Dam State Park is an Illinois state park on 750acre in Macoupin County, Illinois in the United States. The park is southwest of Carlinville, Illinois and is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) as a public place for fishing. The state park centers on the 59acre Beaver Dam Lake, an artificial reservoir which was created by a private Carlinville fishing club in the 1890s. The club later became a private resort which catered to visitors who arrived via the adjacent Chicago and Alton Railroad. During the Great Depression, the resort failed. The state of Illinois purchased the lake and some adjacent property in 1947. Additional land purchases have created the present-day Beaver Dam State Park. The IDNR manages Beaver Dam Lake for the fishing of largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and sunfish. In addition, the park offers opportunities for the hunting of deer, wild turkey, and small game. There is a power limit for boats using the Beaver Dam Lake reservoir, with no gasoline-powered motors allowed.

Bait shop and restaurant are closed and no more boat rentals. Fishing is still ok from the last trip with some nice blue gils and decent channel cat. Fish cleaning station is closed or damaged but is fenced off and not usable. I think the bathrooms are still opened just not sure.
Great 2 mile hike around the lake. Quiet lake and not too far off the freeway for a detour to a State Park.
Nice clean park. An easy 1.5 mile trail around the lake and about a mile around the marsh. Nice area to stretch your legs or stop for a picnic if passing through. Maybe not worth a special trip though
really dope place. Great hiking, one trail went completely around the lake, so constant views. Camping area looked updated and maintained. Pet friendly! Boat ramp for fishing boats.
One of our favorite parks to go camping at! The campground host is friendly and the spots are always clean. Playground: My son loves the playground! Restrooms: They are the basic restrooms. There is one major bathroom that has plumbing and showers. The rest are the non plumbing kind. Dog-friendliness: As long as your dogs are leashed you can take them here. My yorkie loves to go camping with us.
Last March, I planned on staying there for TWO WEEKS on my trip home from snowbirding, working my way back to Wisconsin. When I got there, NOBODY else was around! No director/manager/ host etc. etc. And no other campers, either. I found my site after looking long and hard. It was "supposed" to be near the washrooms, but I'd have to cross a 40 ft ravine down and up to get there, or walk a mile "around" the loop on the road. Being there by myself and sooooo isolated really creeped me out! My only setting up was to unhook my camper and one of the few nights I've ever locked it when sleeping! I decided to leave by 8 am the next morning. When I called reservations.com where I had made my reservation and pre-pay, by the way! I was told they no longer handled that park. I was to call ??? in Illinois who were in charge of the reservations now. I was told then the guy was very nice, by the way I would receive a refund for the time I didn't stay, minus the day and time to cancel clause. I "would get my refund in 3-4 weeks"... 4 MONTHS LATER, I still have NOT GOTTEN MY REFUND! It may be a nice camp in the summer, but for me it was a horrible experience. I've learned too often outside people who book the reservations have no idea what the park layout truly is!
Beautiful State Park! Great place for a hike!
Even though we had no luck fishin the campground and facilities were very clean.
Gorgeous quiet state park with camping.
Clean Park, lots of wildlife, fishing and plenty of camp site for RV's and tent camping.
