Beer Can House

Description

The Beer Can House is a folk art house in Rice Military, Houston, Texas, covered with beer cans, bottles, and other beer paraphernalia.Houstonian John Milkovisch worked through the late 1960s to transform his Houston home at 222 Malone Street into the Beer Can House. The Beer Can House is now one of Houston's most recognizable folk art icons. It is covered with flattened beer cans, bottle caps, bottles, and other beer ephemera. The house is estimated to include over 50,000 beer cans.Milkovisch started his project in 1968 inlaying thousands of marbles, rocks, brass figures and metal pieces in concrete blocks and redwood, all of which were used to make patios, fences, flower boxes, and an array of other items. The result was a yard with no grass, as the entire front and back yards were covered with cement. When asked why he did it, John simply answered, "I got sick of mowing the grass."Today, the Beer Can House is owned and operated by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, a non-profit organization founded in 1980 to preserve and present works of extraordinary imagination and provide people the opportunity to express personal artistic vision. On March 2004, John Milkovisch was named Man of the Week on Spike TV. In 2010 comedy news site Cracked.com said, "if there's ever a vote on who the awesomest guy ever was, John Milkovisch ought to at least be on the ballot."

Very interesting little Houston find! Took 20 years to transform the outside of the house into beer cans. His wife made a deal to let him do whatever to the outside ad long as she had the inside, to which they have kept pretty much the same since she lived there. Not very big but worth checking out.
Such a great place to checkout! FYI walking the grounds is free but it’s five dollar admission to get in and check out the house inside. Apparently all the beer cans on the premises were drunk by the owner and his wife and some friends.
The house is located in between some gorgeous houses!! I'm happy to see that the house is there and hopefully they don't have a HOA. Fun to see what they made and I'll be happy to contribute drinking beer while they can keep the cansVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
Good place for a quick visit. Took around 15-20 mins. Admission fee is 5$. Can park on the street side. Staff is friendly and informative about the history of this beer can house.
This is definitely a funny thing to see... All of the walls are also covered in unfolded and flattened beer cans. Pretty amazing! There is a donation to enter but it was closed when we went. But you can pretty much see everything anywaysVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Pretty kool to see all the things they did with the beer cans/bottles on the outside of the house which you can self tour for free. The inside guided tour will require a fee/donation. Cool touristy situation will have to wait to take advantage of the best photo ops.
'in the end we are only stories' and John Milkovichs legacy lives on. Such a weird and wonderful story of this man who took beer cans and added them to his house. Such a character; the ladder in the front yard has a black 4th rung as that was the 'failure' step on every man's progress to 'Amen'/heaven. For only $5 this is a quirky stop tour. It needs to have a bar so that visitors can enjoy a beer and keep adding to the structure
Didn't get to enter but got to get out and take pictures. Only open on weekends noon to 5pm. Didn't think it would be around huge houses but it is. Can tell they are not sell outs and love the house. The house is one of a kind. It was amazing to think it was all made from beer cans. Beer cans are faded but can tell what they are. Awesome experience.
Quirky place, friendly staff. Only takes about half an hour to see everything. Came on a cloudy day but probably magnificent on a sunny day.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
This place is definitely a must visit in Houston. It’s cool, quirky and creative. One can walk outside the house and take pictures however to go inside the house, there is a fee. This place is in the residential area. So parking might be a challenge.
