Belknap Mill

About

Built in 1823 and located in the heart of Laconia, the Historic Belknap Mill is the Official Meetinghouse of New Hampshire.

Description

Built in 1823, the Belknap Mill is the only building left that represents the first stage of the Industrial Revolution in America. It is the oldest, unaltered brick textile mill in the United States. The Belknap Mill was one of the first mills to convert from weaving to knitting during the Civil War.

One of the first listed buildings on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the Belknap Mill shows how preservation and history can combine in a community based museum and cultural arts center.

In addition to the hours listed above, we are also open for special events, programs and meetings. Please call ahead if planning a visit on weekends or evenings: (603) 524 8813

The Mill is universally accessible.

This a great free museum with free parking. It probably won't take a long time to go through everything but it's still a really fun stop if you like history.
Great scenic venue for any event! The museum volunteers are the friendliest and most knowledgeable folks!

This multi-use building with dedicated people in the society is the heart of downtown Laconia. I've been to dinner theater, business meetings, and parties on the third floor. I have enjoyed touring the hosiery museum, participating in activities with Larry Frates, the artist in residence, and generally enjoyed being in the building for holidays like Christmas and Halloween.
The Belknap Mill Society is a beautifully preserved historical gem. I have visited in the past with family to see the Mill's exhibit. However this time I visited to observe some amazing artwork done by local residents that was on display. A wonderful place that is truly the heart of the community.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entryFree

Very interactive and hands on field trip with stories about the engineering of the machines and the life challenges of the workers. Excellent!
The birthplace of mill preservation. Be sure to learn about the water power generation and see the way life was lived in 1900.
A great location to bring the family for a really great slice of historical Americana. See one of the last locations to clearly show where the industrial age was born. Beautiful ground really cool location. A really good family time with a great quaint gift shop. If your in the area a nice afternoon stop. Admission is free but donations grateful accepted by the Belknap Mill society to maintain this valuable site. A must see.
