Bell Homestead National Historic Site

Description

The Bell Homestead National Historic Site, located in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, also known by the name of its principal structure, Melville House, was the first North American home of Professor Alexander Melville Bell and his family, including his last surviving son, scientist Alexander Graham Bell. The younger Bell conducted his earliest experiments in North America there, and later invented the telephone at the Homestead in July 1874. In a 1906 speech to the Brantford Board of Trade, Bell made the following comment, "the telephone problem was solved, and it was solved at my father's home".The approximately 4-hectare site has been largely restored to its appearance when the Bells lived there in the 1870s, and Melville House now serves as a museum to the family and to the invention of the telephone. A large visitor reception centre has also been added adjacent to Melville House. The Henderson Home building was later added to the Homestead in 1969, being moved there from its original location in downtown Brantford. It was Canada's first telephone company business office, opened in 1877 as a predecessor of the Bell Telephone Company of Canada. After being moved to the Bell Homestead it was converted into an adjunct museum on the development of telephone technology. The Homestead is operated by the Bell Homestead Committee of the City of Brantford. The Homestead was recognized as historic on 1 Jun 1996 and was formally listed on the Canadian Register on 22 June 2009, becoming one of the National Historic Sites of Canada on that date. The commemorative plaque was unveiled the following year by Queen Elizabeth II during the 150th anniversary year celebrations for the birth of Alexander Graham Bell. Melville House has been described as "...this shrine, where lingers the spirit of the great inventor".

Our guide was a university student and the best guide/docent we have ever had ANYWHERE. He was knowledgeable, dressed in period costume, patient, and held objects for ideal photo opportunities. Tours are highly worth it. Prepare to spend 2.5-3.5 hours in total. Check the website to ensure you arrive at tour times and check that there's enough space for your group.
When you visit Brantford, this is a must on your to do list. The history is remarkable, the stories so real, and the tea house is absolutely delicious. Be sure to visit, make a reservation and indulge in this locally inspiring experience for at least 2 hours. Don't rush! Cheers, Spicy Jan
I've gone there before ages ago and it was interesting. But the tour we took today was really informative. Jillian did her absolute best to answer our questions and made sure to include my 9 year old into the experience. The ticket prices are reasonable $10 adult, less for seniors and kids. The tour took a bit over an hour, and it's limited to 8 people or less at a time, so it's a good feeling because you're not in a giant crowd.
This place is a must visit to those who love history. I loved every bit of my time spent here. While I was taking look at each invention of Sir Graham Bell, it took me back to thoughts of them old days when the world & technology was yet to evolve. You will be able to take a guided tour inside Sir Bell’s house $20, the guide will tell you every details of the items kept there & there also will be screen of a short documentary. There also a cafe next to the house where you can enjoy some great snack & coffee. The grand River flows by the house, there are corn fields on the front. There’s a lot of love elements aswell like a swing, chair that Mr&Mrs Bell would spend. The best time to visit this place will be summer or fall. A pre booking for a guided tour should be done as it’s timed & available at specific time of day with limited people. It’s a good place to take children along coz it’s going to fascinate them more & show how far we’ve all come in this evolving technology.
Nice small museum, that tells us the history of Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the phone and lived in that house for a while. It is actually a tour, that takes about an hour. The guide was very nice lady, who was dressed old fashioned and told the story pretty interesting. The tour mostly is between the rooms of the house and the story mostly about Graham’s family. It is very nice and recommended.
A really interesting historic site where you can learn about the history of the telephone! The tour was great too.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Great experience. Kids loved it and even I learned a few new things. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff as well. Will definitely return.
Amazing place! Would be a great experience for the kids to gain perspective of how life was in those years. The host Addison was great. Answered questions patiently.
Closed on Sunday, wonderful history and splendid gardens though sad to see veggies going to waste on ground. Perhaps critters will consume them
It's informative, beautiful experience. They arrange for the guided tour in the site. The cafe there has perfect apple dupple cake with creamy coffee, they're super tasty. Everyone should go for it too.
