Berkeley County Historical Society

About

Preserving the history of Berkeley County, WV.

Description

The Berkeley County Historical Society began in the late 1920’s. Citizens, interested in preserving the diverse history of the county joined to do their best to keep their families, friends and neighbors mindful of where they all came from and how the area came to have such a rich and diverse background. When the Great Depression struck, through the hardships of World War II, the society fell inactive. The cause was taken up again in the 1950’s being organized into a formal Society in 1963. The Society has met regularly since that time.

I called in a request regarding trying to finding the father to my ancestor, Peter Courtney. I was told by phone the information was found but that they could not find a marriage certificate regarding a marriage. The lady on the phone was an older woman, she informed me that I only needed to send in a $30.00 check. I immediately sent in the check so that I could receive the information promptly. Weeks went by and I did not hear anything, I left messages on the voicemail and no one returned my call. In the process a family member passed away who was deeply into finding out who Peter's father was as he had been searching himself for years. Out of nowhere, I receive an email regarding whether I received the information yet from a JoAnne Huntsberry. I informed her that I had not received the information in the mail and if possible could she email me the information while I was awaiting for it to come in the mail. It took a couple of days before she responded and she informed me that she had not even started on the search which totally contradicts the information I received by phone. The information she finally emailed me was nothing of any importance and it did not have a father listed for my ancestor Peter Courtney. I am really disappointed in the services provided. I just called the office and the lady would not give me the contact information of the President for she said I needed to speak to JoAnne first. I explained to her that I have been communicating through JoAnne via emails and was not getting anywhere and would like to express my concern for her lack of concern for my being dissatisfied with her services. Sincerely James Michael Courtney McCoy
My wife called several months ago, before they "temporally closed", in an attempt to get family historical information. The man who answered said that he was going on vacation, and that he would call her back afterward. She never heard from anyone again. She was willing to pay for any assistance once they called her back. I'm glad we didn't.
Completely worthless place. I called and asked if they had maps in their collection from the 1700s of the town. I was told there was one lady who had a key to the map room and she wasn't there that day. The lady I spoke with said the next time she came in, she would get access to the maps and look for what I had requested. I stated in my request that I only wanted maps of the area and info on my ancestor that did not include certain categories and had already done extensive research. For my $60, I got copies of a few things I already had and some entries out of the phone book of people who had the last name of my ancestor. None of it could be used in my project. When I called back to say that I got nothing I asked for, I was told, "Well, it still took me time to look that up." What a waste of money!
Well they didn’t respond to my emails when I visited they were very friendly and helpful trying to find information they have a fair amount of genealogical information though your location is a bit antiquated and Dusty the library in town has a nicer collection however this location has files which you won’t be able to find at the library
